Mother Bear and her Four Cubs, 3 1/2’ tall x 5’ wide, red cedar and acrylic paint. -A long time ago Mother Bear gave birth to four cubs. The cubs were uniquel...y coloured; one red, one black, one yellow, and one white. They played hard, slept hard and ate hard. They grew and grew, and one day Mother Bear realized that there was little food left. It was time for her cubs to leave, so she sent them to the four corners of the Earth to establish their own territories and hunting grounds. The cubs flourished in their new environments, had large families, and their children had large families. After many generations, just as before, the bears started to fill their new territories, and eat up the food. They had to leave the safe confines of their homes and go into other territories. When the different colour bears saw each other they didn’t remember they once had been brothers and sisters, and horrible fights happened. It made Mother Bear so sad to see her grandchildren fight, and she is still trying to help them remember where they come from. -Trevor Husband (Gitxsan/Cree) This piece came to me as I was meditating on the Black Lives Matter Movement, and our own Indigenous Rights movements happening everywhere. I was looking for a way that I could contribute something as an artist, and the story and images came to me as I sat under the cedars outside my studio. I have heard similar stories from elders, but this version doesn’t belong to any particular nation, it’s more of a commentary on our current society. The four colours represent the four races of people, as are they a part of the medicine wheel. I deliberately put the black and white cubs together to draw attention to the struggle for Black equality, which mirrors our own indigenous struggles for justice. Mother Bear is akin to Mother Earth, who is all of our mothers, and who weeps for how we treat her and each other. Mother Bear is holding a Human, and this shows how we are related, and how the lessons from the animals can help us. #gitxsan #formline #nativeart #nativeartist #indigenousart #firstnationsart #redcedar #woodcarving ##northwestcoastart #northwestnativeart See more

This was an incredibly powerful moment today and it was entirely impromptu. A van with several soldiers from CFB Comox had just arrived to help support the Snow...birds team as they grieve and debrief. They were driving by and happened across the growing memorial along the fence, and this drum circle. They hit the brakes, moved by what they were seeing. They got out and began to take pictures and video with their phones. Then as the drummers saw them, they all turned to face them and were singing and drumming. Lieutenant Alexandra Hejduk was moved, and trying to keep back tears. She asked me to email her my video - because she said the team needs to see this tonight from the community. She says they are hurting like losing a close friend or family member - because the team is like a family in a sense. It was really something to see. Heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. Today we are living a reality that prevents us from doing our fishing charter business. Small tourism businessesthe experiences that inspire us, and connect us... to the world around usare shouldering the weight of the viruss impact. This is a picture of the Marina Pacific Gateway in Port Renfrew today and last year. When the restrictions are lifted all small tourism is going to need your support to survive. Whether its sipping a glass of wine in the Cowichan Valley Vineyard or casting a line on a fishing boat on the West Coast. Book your next holiday in BC. Thanks for your support! See more
