For this week's #WhereAreTheyNow, we caught up with Spring 2018 grantee JoJo Worthington about her Region of Waterloo Arts Fund-funded music video "SMALL ENCOUN...TERS" and what she's up to nowadays. JoJo Worthington's work pushes emotionally potent folk songs to the perilous edge. This Canadian producer/composer crafts experimental post-folk in which intimate recollections explode into limitless soundscapes. JoJo's latest project, TCYK is a celebration of her diverse strengths. This powerhouse of an album is a magnificently textured exploration of Worthington’s experience as a woman navigating tumultuous relationships. , " "? I made a music video for my single "Small Encounters"! We filmed it at a club in Waterloo called Brixton and at St. Matthew's Church in Kitchener. I have another RWAF project in the works but it is on hold due to COVID. ? So many people! People from all over Ontario. I was shocked at how many people attended. I was honestly very worried no one was going to show up to the shoot and the whole thing would be a disaster. Thankfully, KW is a supportive community. I wanted women who are pillars of our community to be seen in the video as I look up to them and they inspire me a lot. Some people I contacted were unable to take part, but those who were able to participate were: Charlena Russell (Russell Music Teaching Studios. Charlena is an incredible musician, producer and teacher in KW. I wanted her to be in it because she involves herself and her business in the community in every way she can. I had the pleasure of working for her a couple years ago. She is so dedicated and pours herself into teaching young up and coming musicians in our region. She's inspiring the next generation of music. She inspires me so much which is why I wanted to collaborate with her!), Caroline Miranda (Caroline is one of the wonderful women behind Feminine Harbour, which is an organization that invites women from all over to tell their stories and experiences), Amanda Lowry (who is a phenomenal flutist, musician and producer in KW) and Lauren Weinberg (who owns Open Sesame Shop. I had the honour of working for her at Open Sesame. She is the most generous person I've ever met. She provided a space for musicians from all over to come and perform. This was extremely important as there are not any listening room venues in KW. Open Sesame was also a space where artists of all mediums could display and sell their work. I loved working there and I loved that store. KW needs more spaces like this). Additionally, I wanted to include other businesses in KW in my project. Seven Shores provided catering, which Neruda Arts/Kultrun paid for, White Tiger Vintage provided some dresses and costumes for the music video, and St Matthews Church and Brixton Social allowed us to use their locations. It felt really good to involve businesses and organizations from our region. ? Making music and trying to keep sane! COVID has inspired me to write a lot so that's what I've been doing! I'm also teaching online songwriting, ukulele, vocal and music production lessons. I'm also currently enrolled in the SOCAN Equity X Mentorship Program. ? A very important one that is keeping the arts community thriving! I am so thankful that these programs exist and that our community supports new art. Waterloo Arts Fund literally makes dreams come true. I would not have been able to complete these projects without them. ? Currently, I am working on a new album but cannot say when it will be released. As soon as COVID ends I will be planning a tour to the US and throughout Canada. I am also performing a concert involving VR within Kitchener once performances are safe to attend. Listen to TCYK: https://buff.ly/2HMZiWi Learn more about JoJo: https://buff.ly/3mCDtI6
