Zinfandel is thought to be one of the oldest grape varietals from which wine is still being madethere is evidence placing the first Zinfandel wine around 6000 BC! It wasn’t until 2001 that researchers discovered nine lonely vines of locally-known Crljenak Kaštelanski on Croatia’s Dalmation coast that proved to researchers that this ancient Croatian variety has the same DNA as California Zinfandel! What a tale!!! We have been making it at Rust since 2014 from vines planted ...in 2000.so almost as storied. The main point is that it's snowing, the 2018 is showing lovely and you should definitely try it! Amongst the Rust tasting room lives our Heritage House. A truly unique house originally built in the 19th century as a bunkhouse for miners at Sally Silver Mine near Beaverdell. In 1964 Mr. Tokios relocated it to where it stands today on Golden Mile Drive. Log by log, through the tricky Anarchist Mountain switchback roads, and with nothing more than a Volkswagen truck and a trailer, this pioneer created a unique setting on what would become one BC’s finest grape growing areas.... The most striking feature is a one of a kind live desert roof that was sourced from the surrounding hillsides. Cover crops - not just pretty flowers! This growth between and under our vines is playing a vital role in ensuring our soil health continues to develop. Cover crops increase the organic content of the soil, add nutrients vital for healthy vines, prevent erosion, improve the water holding capacity of soil, improve biodiversity, and provide a habitat for some insects we would rather keep on the ground! Manager of Viticulture, Brett Thiessen has ambitious plans to use nature...s own power and farm with the land to pull all the synthetic chemicals from our vineyards. Three beautiful 2017 Syrahs. Each made in the same style, but each from a different appellation within the Okanagan Valley. Recently reviewed by wine critic WineDiva, we wanted to share her thoughts on each of these unique wines with you because, well, we're pretty proud of these three! Golden Mile Bench - 2017 Syrah - 92 Points - "Smoked meats and blackberry jam, white pepper and chocolate, prune and espresso, licorice, molasses and cedar aromas lead to a supple palate.... Generous weight, chocolaty, fleshy and quite ripe it's also concentrated and lengthy. Flavours of white pepper trail on a smooth finish." Daenna Van Mulligan Okanagan Valley - 2017 Syrah - 92 Points - "It has a rich plummy nose with cracked pepper, smoked spices, charred meat and undertones of blackberry and mocha. More restrained yet lively than their other Syrahs, this one is also smooth and the palate shows savoury, meaty, sweet wild bramble fruit, white pepper, cocoa and leather flavours." Some cool stuff from our Vineyard Manager - Brett Thiessen! "A few months ago I had the pleasure of having Pascal Madevon come out and dig some pits with me on our new vineyard sight. He had some concerns with the location but once we got into the dirt, he became very excited about what we were seeing! My biggest goals for this vineyard are; 1) To plant with purpose, AKA the right varietals in the right spots and produce beautiful fruit 2) To turn this sand and silt into b...eautiful soil that is filled with organic matter from compost and cover crops allowing us to avoid using any outside inputs 3) Farm with nature instead of against it 4) Rehabilitate somewhere between 10-20 acres of riparian habitat" There will be plenty of more updates as the project evolves! #OldVinesNewWines #Similkameen #InRustWeTrust #Vineyard See more
