Such a cool idea to get the general public to help with wildlife studies!

Things tend to get a little ‘hairy’ when stallions from different bands meet up! Wild horses maintain stable year-round social units or 'bands'. The band stalli...ons (adult males) will defend females from being taken by other males through ritualized greetings, posturing, or even violent battles. This was a brief and non-injurious confrontation that was likely done to "size up" the competition. Photos by Sarah Medill

Curious about how wild horses and grey seals get along on one tiny island? They tolerate each other well, though the seals prefer it when the horses keep their... distance! Although most seals stay on the beaches and in the sandy blowouts, there are always a few that move inland and give birth amongst the vegetation. When they do they bring important nutrients from the marine ecosystem with them, which is then incorporated into the vegetation, and eventually to the horses who feed on it. Photos by Sarah Medill

I didn't get chance to post it at the time, but Tues' winds were crazy! Gusts in the mid 35 kts range, which worked okay on landing because they were pretty mu...ch straight down the runway du jour. But after only a 1:02 trip on the way out (163 nm), it took me 1:58 on the way back - so painful! Then I spotted a tanker and thought, "I'd sure rather be plodding along up here than be down there in the whitecaps!" See more

I've been landing down by #3 life-saving station lately, and have occasionally flown over the Skidby wreck, but today I finally remembered to grab my phone and snap a pic! According to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic's Shipwreck Database, on Jan 31, 1905, the Skidby ran aground on Sable. The Captain cut his engines and dropped anchor, but about 8 hours later it drifted off and then grounded again. The 26 crew were able to walk to shore, and month later, they were taken to Halifax. (https://novascotia.ca/museum/wrecks/wrecks/shipwrecks.asp) The Skidby is one of the only wrecks visible from the air. I have seen one or two others over the years, but only on single occasions, and the next time I looked for them I couldn't find them. I know it's just an outline, but I still get excited whenever I see it :)

What a gorgeous day on Sable yesterday! The colour of some of the plants' leaves are changing, but there are still wildflowers like purple aster to be seen - such a pretty contrast. I think this is my favourite month to walk around on Sable - the temperature is cool enough that you don't bake under the sun, without it being so cold as to be uncomfortable.
