"As cases of COVID-19 surge across the province, several regions have been placed in lockdown and Ontarians are being told to stay home in order to stay safe. Residential tenants cannot follow this advice if they are being evicted from their homes. " http://www.womanact.ca//ontario-needs-a-moratorium-on-resi
Spotlight on Consent *Consent is Informed* Being informed means that we know and understand all the information about a situation.... Asking someone to go outside for a walk? Maybe they need to check the weather first. Offering someone a fresh baked cookie? Maybe they have an allergy. Being informed means we can make decisions that help us all feel good. Does knowing ALL of the information about a situation sound daunting? Don’t worry because there are tools you can use to do your best. There are many different types of knowledge, so start by reflecting on the knowledge you have benefited from in the past, would sharing those ideas help in this situation? Consider a time where you may have felt misled and think of what you could do to prevent misleading others. Finally, communication is key, if you’re not sure that you’re sharing all the best information with the person you’re getting consent from, ask them if they think you’re missing anything. Maybe they will think of something else, or maybe you’ll discover there are some things you’ll get to learn together. #Consent #Informed #Knowledge #Information #SexualViolencePrevention
Thank you St. Leonard’s Community Support, Prevention and Residential Services.
#RapeCulture is alive and well; even in Canada's judicial system. The Ghomeshi trial was a perfect example of this. #RelentlessResilience is a movement to advance equity and end #genderbasedviolence in Canada for good. Join us. #GBV #IPV #RapeisAHateCrime
"When we listen, we are given the opportunity to prevent the kinds of violent acts we are remembering today. When we listen, we are able to intervene when the people around us need it the most." https://inquinte.ca//listen-understand-and-be-supportive-o #DEC6TH

Spotlight on Consent *Consent is Enthusiastic!* When we are excited to say yes or are into someone else’s happiness - that's Enthusiasm. Consent isn't just asking questions, but an entire state of being. ... How do YOU express and hear joy when communicating with the people around you? #consent #enthusiastic

"September 30th has been declared Orange Shirt Day annually, in recognition of the harm the residential school system did to children's sense of self-esteem and wellbeing, and as an affirmation of our commitment to ensure that everyone around us matters." https://www.facebook.com/orangeshirtdayeverychildmatters/
Thank you United Way Hastings and Prince Edward for the donations of treats from Nestle!
"Consent Isn't Always Sexual It's important to ask for consent for all things: Can I pet your dog/cat?... Can I give you a hug? Can I sit here? For pregnant *people*, ask if you can feel their stomach. Can I tag you in my photo? Are you okay if we go here for these plans? How to handle "no" as an answer: Accept the answer and move on. Do not pressure them to change their answer. It's okay to feel disappointment with a no answer, but always remember that respecting boundaries is the right thing to do. The person who told you "no" isn't responsible for helping you process that disappointment." From North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault

A few seasonal self care activities to try this fall.
"I think it’s lazy for me to just say I’m body positive at this point, Lizzo says. It’s easy. I would like to be body-normative. I want to normalize my body. And not just be like, ‘Ooh, look at this cool movement. Being fat is body positive.’ No, being fat is normal. I think now, I owe it to the people who started this to not just stop here. We have to make people uncomfortable again, so that we can continue to change. Change is always uncomfortable, right?" https://www.vogue.com/article/lizzo-cover-october-2020

To our community members, survivors, and allies, The OCRCC and a number of Sexual Assault Centres across the province are saddened to announce the postponement of our Take Back The Night Virtual Edition. With safety precautions around Covid-19 and regulations on hosting large events we want to bring to survivors across the province the best Virtual Take Back The Night that we can. The virtual event will take place later this Fall. Stay tuned for updates! Follow the #TBTNVIR...TUAL hashtag for updates or check back on our Facebook event page and the OCRCC website where updates will be shared. In these uncertain times it is important that we take the time to create an event that engages survivors, and that truly encompasses our theme for 2020 which focuses on honouring and supporting BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Persons of Colour) Survivors in sharing their stories. We recognize that BIPOC survivors have long been silenced by systemic racism and face an increased risk of experiencing sexual and physical violence. We want to provide space for BIPOC survivors and their voices. We want to acknowledge the barriers that racism creates for BIPOC survivors when they are accessing support and we want to work towards dismantling these systems within our own communities. We would like to send out a heartfelt thank you to our speakers and community members who submitted pieces for our Take Back The Night Video. We can't wait to showcase your words and art soon, and we hope to do them justice. We would like to give a special thank you to Black Women In Motion, who partnered with us to support community submissions. We will have updates on our rescheduled Take Back The Night Virtual Edition, please stay tuned!

BREAKING: Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died at age 87. Here's a look at the legacy she leaves behind.
Allyship is a lifelong process As an ally, you will make mistakes Don't give up...... Change happens from the many ripples we make together. Draw the Line
Thank you RBG. "The decision whether or not to bear a child is central to a women's life, to her well-being and dignity. It is a decision she must make for herself. When the government control that decision for her, she is being treated as less than a full adult human responsible for her own choices."... - Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 1993 Senate Confirmation Hearings.
SACQD stands in solidarity with all who are feeling the loss of Ruth Bader Ginsberg. Her powerful legacy will continue to inspire and empower. Rest In Peace.
We're 6 days and less than a week away from our first ever Ontario wide online Take Back the Night! Check out our event page for more info and see you there!! #TBtNVirtual
