Call for submissions What does it mean to be lost, to grapple with what has gone missing, and to reconcile absence? To encounter it, to feel it, to embody it, and to fully understand it, if at all possible? The next issue of SAD explores loss in all of its multi-layered expressions. We want to see your stories, articles, poems, essays and artworks that navigate the space of being lost, in and out of the ordinary. Illustrators or film photographers who want to get introspe...ctive, submit your portfolio to be paired with a story and create an original piece for our 31stissue. This is a paid opportunity. We especially encourage submissions from LGBTQIA2S+ and BIPOC creatives, and editorial support will be provided for emerging writers. Link in bio

Meet October’s featured artist @justinecrawfart , Justine Crawford has had a passion for art since highschool, when she painted and drew in a more realistic and detailed style. While taking on the challenge of inking 31 drawings during Inktober in October 2018, the daily task forced her to simplify her style. Some of my pieces have been inspired directly by my grandpa, so showing my extended family and my grandma these pieces, they think it's a very big tribute to the fa...mily. - Justine Crawford // Read more over at SADmag.ca words by @bexinvcity Illustrations by @justinecrawfart See more

Meet Septembers’ featured artist@sowhereproject , Emilie Borodine, France-born, now Vancouver-based ceramicist who took her first pottery class two years ago and found her inspiration to be the body. Some people will really scream ‘Boobs!’ She says, adding that others have reacted with judgement over humour. It brings a reaction, and I like that because it makes people speak about itnot to necessarily sexualize it, just being comfortable with it. The next issue of SAD ponders the theme of death. Send us pitches for your best essays, articles, poems, stories, and artwork that explore the final frontier. Tell us about your encounters with entities that might hint toward an understanding of ulterior dimensions, or near-death encounters that have shifted the way you see the world. What is death to you? How is everyday life affected by the knowledge that the end is imminent? We want to hear your chilling, heartwarming, dee...p, and/or funny insights. Illustrators and film photographers who want to get spooky, submit your portfolio to be paired with a story and create an original piece for our 30th issue. We especially encourage submissions from LGBTQ+ and BIPOC creatives, and editorial support will be provided for emerging writers. Submissions are open from now until September 17th. If you’ve ever thought the world needs more adorably animated buttholes and shorts about consent, don’t fret! The extremely talented @karlamontz has delivered. Karla Monterrosa (she/her) is a queer animation filmmaker, illustrator, and comedian born and raised in San Salvador, El Salvador. In 2009, she relocated to the unceded, ancestral, and occupied traditional lands of the xmkym (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Slílwta (Tsleil-Watuth) Nations of the Coas...t Salish peoples. karla graduated from Emily Carr University of Art + Design with a BFA in Animation. She got her first period on October 11th, 2001 and hasn’t stopped talking about that (or any other body fluid, really) since. She’s obsessed with the awkwardness of the human body (especially her own), and aspires to create images that reflect a world in which shame doesn’t exist. See Karla’s amazing animated short during our digital launch party happening Thurs Aug 6th from 6-7pm. Link to the FREE event will be posted on social media and our website the day of the event.
