my top tips for a safe halloween I know this year is going to look and feel a lot different than previous years, depending on where you live and what your current public health guidelines are. If you're trick-or-treating this year, here are my top 10 tips for keeping our littlest trick-or-treaters safe:... 1 The most popular hours for trick-or-treating are between 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. - if you can avoid driving during these times, please do! 2 If your child's costume isn't lightly coloured, consider decorating it with reflective tape where possible to enhance their visibility. 3 Remind excited children not to run into the street or cross the street between parked cars. 4 Costumes should be easy to move in - avoid tripping hazards such as heels or large shoes, long dresses or long capes. 5 Costumes aren't for car seats - their added bulk can be dangerous in the event of a collision. Change your child into their costume once they're at their destination. 6 Walking on sidewalks is preferable, where you can. Try to walk up the entire side of one street, cross once, and then back down the other, to avoid crossing the street more times than necessary. 7 Costume masks can obstruct a child's vision. If possible, using face paint or make-up is preferred. 8 Remember that many candies can pose choking hazards for small children. 9 Label your child's costume with your address and cell phone number. 10 Use glow-sticks or flashlights to enhance their visibility and help them see where they're going. Are you trick-or-treating this year? Is it allowed where you live? Doing something else, instead? Tell me in the comments!

costumes + car seats Depending on where you live, in some areas trick-or-treating is still an option that some families will be participating in this year. So, with that in mind: ... Did you know? Wearing a bulky costume in a car seat is the same safety concern as wearing a puffy winter coat in a car seat. When children wear a bulky costume underneath a car seat harness, it can add space and make the harness too loose (and feel falsely tight). When crash forces are applied, this can lead to a significant amount of slack being introduced into the harness, which may impact the car seat's ability to protect the child in a crash. To keep your child safe: Change them into their costume once you reach your destination. Alternatively, opt for non-bulky costumes Remove excess costume pieces such as wings, tails or any other accessories that could alter their fit in the car seat If you're planning on dressing up this year, what will your little ones be dressed up as? Parents: Small children cant always tell the difference between a food item and a poisonous look-alike. There is enough alcohol in this small package of hand s...anitizer to cause harm to a small child if it was eaten. Treat ALL hand sanitizers--especially ones that look and smell like food, candy or toys--as you would other poisonous household products: keep them out of reach of small children. Adults should always monitor use of hand sanitizer by small children to ensure that the proper amount is used. Teach older children about the proper use of hand sanitizer, and the importance of not putting it in their mouths. See more
