Hello STB Family! We hope you are keeping well during these uncertain and trying times. As many of you may have heard, marinas have been given the go ahead to open. Unfortunately, this does not apply to our sailing program, as physical distancing measures are still in place. This makes it impossible for us to be together in a classroom or on sailboats for the time being. That said, we have been thinking long and hard about how to provide our sailors with programming while a...dhering to Federal and Provincial laws. One idea that seems to be the most plausible is virtual lessons, which would be held over Google Hangouts or Zoom, and would be similar to a regular lecture-style lesson we would teach before our on-water drills. We are hoping to offer these lessons to both youth and adults, but other details, such as longevity, price, dates, and times are to be determined. As well, if you are working on a level, the virtual material would count towards your off-water skills checklist. As always, things are changing very rapidly. We are hoping to be out on the water this summer, but virtual lessons would give us the opportunity to learn and grow as sailors should physical distancing remain in place. Temple Reef Sailing Club has made the incredibly difficult decision to shut down Sail Thunder Bay operations this summer. It marks the first time in 50 years the sailing school will not be active. Very sad day for STB, as we felt more prepared than ever going into this season, especially after coming out of record enrolment in 2019. Unfortunately due to ongoing uncertainty with summer camps, social distancing regulations, and funding, we felt it was the best choice for this s...eason. MEET OUR TEAM DAY 3: Linnea G. is joining us for her second straight year as an instructor! Prior to working for STB, Linnea was a volunteer and a student. Linnea comes from a large family of sailors and has been sailing since before she could walk. Linnea’s family have several boats that they race and cruise throughout the sailing season. Linnea races keelboats on Wednesday nights and is Race Committee for Thursday night Lightning races. Linnea is also a competitive Laser sailor and competed in the Manitoba Games in 2016, landing a spot in 3rd place and bringing home a bronze medal! MEET OUR TEAM DAY 2: Stephen K. is returning for his 5th year as an instructor with STB! Stephen took sailing lessons at STB from a young age and became an instructor soon after receiving his CANSail 4. Stephen races keelboats on Wednesdays and Lightnings on Thursdays. Stephen’s family also owns a keelboat that they often cruise to various offshore destinations with. Come on down to STB and meet Stephen and the rest of our team!
