Our member boats have state-of-the-industry green technology, with some operators now running groundbreaking new systems that dramatically reduce exhaust and increase fuel efficiency. We cancelled our tour today due to heavy winds and rough seas but I received a message from a friend fishing that he seen a few orca heading west near Sooke. So... I braved the elements and took my private vessel to see if I could find who might be out there. Finally I caught a quick look at a small dorsal way off in the distance.Than from over 400 yards I got one clear shot confirming that it was some of L Pod...and took care to keep my distance, shut down and took a few more pictures for around 5 minutes as others came into view as they swam by. Was glad to document this as sightings have been few and far between for our beloved endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales. Remember these pictures are taken from over 400 meters with a 500 mm Zoom Lens than cropped and edited in an attempt for scientists to record who were present. *Please note we do not promote or actively seek out the SRKW for our commercial tours and if found we follow all Transport Canada rules and regulations of not viewing them at all....We gladly share encounters of Transient Killer Whales and Humpbacks that are doing better than ever recorded. On this Father's Day, and with 2020 vision, we thought we'd dust off the archives again to fondly celebrate and memorialize one of the most recognizable, loved,... and paternally prolific fathers of the Southern Resident community: J1, aka Ruffles. With J2 by his side, J1 was the quintisential image of health and vitality for the Southern Resident Killer whale (SRKW) community for decades, siring more than a dozen offspring during his long and healthy life. J1 was born in 1951 and was the longest lived male killer whale of any studied killer whale population in the world, passing away in 2010. These now decades old photos by photographer Kelley Balcomb-Bartok capture the majesty and the beauty of one of the most iconic male killer whales to ever ply the waters of the Salish Sea, and we share them today to celebrate fathers everywhere.
