Today is day 2 of our initiative leading up to World Homeless Day on Oct 10. Today we talk about some of the numbers out of the Safe and Warm Shelter and some of the generalized potential reasons why our numbers may increase year over year. What surprises you about Barbara’s message? We hope to bring more awareness about homelessness in Brandon and the great work being done in the shelter. #WorldHomelessDay #caringforourcommunity #awareness #LikeAndShare

It’s #thankfulthursday so today we’d like to thank the small group of 3 from Fusion Credit Union that came on a Saturday recently to volunteer in the Food Bank. Thank you for your assistance and your desire to learn about what we do! While covid has changed how volunteering looks at Samaritan House (criteria and regulation changes) we are happy to explore the option of small community or corporate groups coming in on a Saturday when we are closed to the public. If you are interested please contact Marcia at 204-726-0758 ext 4. #communitysupport #volunteeringisfun

October 10th is World Homeless Day and leading up to then we will be sharing insights and stories out of our own Safe and Warm Shelter. Today we will start by sharing some of the history of the homeless shelter in Brandon. Before it was ever the Safe and Warm Shelter, the work of sheltering the homeless overnight began in Dec 2012 with the then executive directive Marla and our now current executive director Barbara. This grassroots initiative was in conjunction with many ...stakeholders working together to make it happen. It had clients register via the 7th St Access Centre and then would meet at a central location at 7:00 pm to be advised which church would be the designated shelter location that night. Clients were given a blanket and a sleeping mat. This was not a daily operation but only on very cold evenings and ran from Dec 2012 March 2013. For the 2013-2014 season it ran from Dec to March as well and was operated out of the foyer of the old Samaritan House location on Rosser Ave. Clients still registered at 7th St Access Centre. In 2014 the shelter moved over to 820 Pacific Ave and the Safe and Warm Shelter at Samaritan House was officially created. It started as a tarp on the concrete floor with mats put out on it, so we have come a long ways to our current more permanent set up. And please don’t worry, clients are no longer sleeping on the floor! At that time the shelter was open from Nov to March each year. In 2018 we had an very generous anonymous donation that allowed the shelter to open in Oct. This was critical as there was a lack of housing options with the Massey Manor fire affecting many. In 2020 we received funding from various community partners, agencies and the City to stay open for April and then funding from the Province of MB to keep the shelter open from May 1 until Oct 31. This has been a tremendous blessing as our numbers continue to increase year over year particularly with Covid19 hitting many people hard financially. On Nov 1 the Reaching Home Dollars from the Gov of Canada will fund the shelter until March 31 as the 2nd year of a 5 year funding contract. It is through the generosity of community partners, government funding, grants, and donations from people like you that ensure we can keep our doors open and we cannot thank you enough. Tomorrow we will be doing an interview with our executive director Barbara so please come back each day as we lead up to Oct 10 #worldhomelessday #awareness #homelessness #servingourcommunity #LikeAndShare

We are very pleased with the completion of our new washroom that was funded by the United Way of Brandon and the Government of Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund. This washroom will be by the Food Bank when we move back over there and will be used for proper hand washing and Covid safe education for our clients. Today we did a presentation to the media on some updates on the Food Bank, Home Nutrition Learning Program, the Safe & Warm Shelter and also had a chance to thank the United Way for their generous support. I apologize the sound quality was poor at the beginning. We didn’t realize how much background noise there was. The sound is clear once we move to the Safe & Warm Shelter. So to recap, our Executive Director Barbara acknowledged and thanked the United Way for their suppor...t particularly with the donation from the Government of Canada Emergency Committee Support Funds which was used to build a new washroom. When we move our food back back into that space, our clients will use the washroom for proper hand washing and education on being covid safe. We welcomed Cynamon from the United Way and she shared a message of thanks to donors and partners which has allowed them to give back roughly $500,000 yearly to the community. The Government of Canada Emergency Commitee Fund helps to fund immediate needs and United Way is able to give back to many community partners such as Samaritan House. The United Way is campaigning and you can donate today at brandonuw.ca! Thank you for watching and we promise we will do better with the background noise next time. See more

We are very grateful that the Home Nutrition Program has been extended until Dec. This government funded program is available to families with school age children. You do not need to be a part of our food bank hamper program to participate in this program (and you also can if you are). We would love for our agency partners and the community to share this with families that could use some assistance with getting nutritious fresh fruit, veggies, grains and dairy on their table. #healthychoices

We would like to say a special thank you to Saputo (Saputo in Brandon) for donating a whopping 2592 litres of chocolate milk yesterday! Not only were we able to give this out to our food bank clients, we had excess to share with our community partners like Brandon’s Food for Thought, Helping Hands, Brandon Bear Clan, 7th Street Access Centre, Brandon Energy Efficiency Program (BEEP), Public Health (PMH) community mobile unit, The Brandon Friendship Center, and Crocus Plains High School. Thank you for helping make a difference in the Brandon community and for giving us the opportunity to graciously share with others! #thankfulthursday #moooovingexperience #thankyoudairymuch
