Onward! I think everyone deserves a pat on the back for not only surviving, but making the most of a year no one saw coming. For the most part the horse community proved to be very resilient and, despite extremely challenging circumstances, managed to keep their horses in oats. The horses, as always, gave us so much in return - for many of us providing an escape from our isolation and an opportunity for exercise and little bit of social interaction....Continue reading

Thoughts on Covid Protocols As we have just entered a new lockdown in Quebec with accompanying protocols set out by Cheval Quebec, I wonder if it would not be feasible to implement more 'personalized' guidelines tailored to each farm or stable. The challenges presented by a 40-horse boarding/lesson/training stable are very different from those of a small farm with a few boarders, yet they all fall under the same umbrella. What I am thinking is the responsible organization - ...i.e., Cheval Quebec - would present a set of basic guidelines that would need to be complied with, starting with a limit on the number of people per square foot of 'public space' (aisle/tackroom/lounge, etc.), in the same way stores and other public buildings do. Restrictions on people coming in from other places, for lessons, for example, and reducing the risks of riding by prohibiting jumping are perhaps other 'general' rules the guidelines could contain. After that though, it would be up to the individual stable manager/owner to develop a plan for their operation and submit it for approval. This would allow them to outline what should be safe and reasonable for their clients and horses. Perhaps a photo or two of the facilities would be necessary to support the proposal, but I think we might have far greater compliance and respect for regulations if the people on the ground can help craft the rules. I can't imagine these proposals would be so long and onerous to read that the process would take too long and decisions couldn't be made quickly. Further information or adjustments to the plan could always be requested by authorities. Thoughts? Comments?
