"Mommy I'm worried about the sickness." Does this sound familiar? Especially when things start to open back up, the weather gets nicer, or you start to se...e others for distant visits this can be very confusing for our little ones. Over the next week we will be giving you some simple tools you can use to help them feel safe and heard as things open up. Today we are going to talk about responding to anxious thoughts. This same technique can be used for any anxious thoughts that your children may have. Validate/Narrate: "I hear you are scared." Normalize: "Things opening up can feel really scary." (This helps kids know they aren't alone in their feeling or crazy for feeling this way.) Safety: "It's my job to keep you safe, we are going to go slow and be careful." Kids need to know that we have got this. We are the anchor that keeps them safe. Coping: "Let's come up with some things you will feel comfortable with first." We want to ensure we aren't rushing our kids to do things that are beyond their comfort level. They may only be comfortable with a high five or fist bump with others at first and that is ok! How are your kids feeling about things opening up? We have content planned for the next week on this topic so stay tuned @ourmamavillage for more support! See more

10 ways to form a secure attachment with your infants and children. 1. Make regular eye contact. 2. Use a gentle soothing tone of voice. 3. Comfort your child w...hen they are distressed. 4. Provide for their basic needs (food, drink, safe place to live, comfort). 5. Apologize if you make a mistake. 6. Engage in activities with your child that they enjoy. 7. Work through your own emotions and practice emotional regulation. 8. Acknowledge and allow their big emotions (you can set limits on behaviours while still accepting emotions). For example: I see your really angry right now! Wow! When we are angry we can _____ but it’s not ok to _____. 9. Practice and model self compassion. 10. Maintain realistic expectations about your child’s behaviour. What’s your favourite way to feel bonded with your baby? Share below!
