The Superintendent’s Residence was home to 7 different families between 1897 and 1979. Although the architectural beauty of the home remains, its lavish gardens no longer exist.

The canal has changed a lot in the last 125 years. When it was restored as a recreational lock in 1998, the lock chamber became slightly narrower than it once was. Look closely - can you spot where the historic gates used to be? What else has changed over the years?

The Sault Ste. Marie Canal was a large shipping lock from 1895 to 1987. The lock chamber is now much smaller and is only suitable for recreational vessels. Here we have two pictures of the original upper gates which are no longer in use.

In August 1897, the Superintendent’s Residence was completed. This building symbolized the rank and prestige of the superintendent’s position. The building remains a dominant and impressive feature of the Sault Ste. Marie Canal.

On October 15, 1894, the W.A. Rooth was the first vessel to lock through the Sault Ste. Marie Canal, manually. Pictured almost exactly 126 years later, the Soo Lock tour boat exits the lock chamber.

September 7th, 1895, the Sault Ste. Marie Canal operated electrically for the first time. The Majestic, a 700 passenger steamer, locked through. Two days later, the official grand opening of the canal took place.
