The Sault Ste. Marie Canal was a large shipping lock from 1895 to 1987. The lock chamber is now much smaller and is only suitable for recreational vessels. Here we have two pictures of the original upper gates which are no longer in use.

In August 1897, the Superintendent’s Residence was completed. This building symbolized the rank and prestige of the superintendent’s position. The building remains a dominant and impressive feature of the Sault Ste. Marie Canal.

September 7th, 1895, the Sault Ste. Marie Canal operated electrically for the first time. The Majestic, a 700 passenger steamer, locked through. Two days later, the official grand opening of the canal took place.
