Quadra and Campbell River rally- Today around the province many people came out in their communties and rallied for wild salmon <3 This time it was in response ...to a deadline issued years ago at the Cohen Commission, a $27 million dollar publicly funded inquiry into the decline of Fraser River Sockeye, who are headed towards extinction. While many factors affect our wild fish, salmon farms with their foreign diseases and uncontrollable, drug resistant sea lice infestations are the final nail in the coffin for our wild stocks. Justice Cohen said that by September 30 2020 to prohibit net-pens in Discovery Islands if at most minimal risk is found to harm Fraser River Sockeye. I'm sure Justice Cohen would agree that if anything, things in the salmon farming industry have gotten much worse. Never mind the foreign viruses they've introduced to this coast, this year DFO gave salmon farmers a 42 day grace period where they could essentially have as many sea lice on their fish as they wanted, because none of the drugs were/are working...The industry then chose to take this 42 day period when juvenile salmon were on their outward migration (a death sentence for scaleless fish)...and last week a report showed us that the industry is under reporting their sea lice numbers...lower numbers means they don't trigger expensive sea lice treatments...this is beyond "minimal risk" and simply unacceptable! I hope you agree...if we want wild salmon, it's up to us! Please Contact Minister of Fisheries Jordan and urge her to follow Justice Cohen’s Recommendation #19 in her required September 30 DECISION: TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE! Eight days ago I counted just over 300 pinks, ideally I should have counted over 10,000, said Sewid. The low number of salmon is not helping the bears, she sa...id and added that this year she observed a low count of berries too another food source. The Smith Inlet team is used to observing grizzlies on a regular basis in their territory. When the grizzlies come out of hibernation from April to May, they are usually skinny and they gain weight in a couple of weeks, said Sewid. But seeing an emaciated grizzly in September is alarming.

Earlier this week we found out that here in BC, when salmon farmers are responsible for counting their sea lice infestations, their counts are always much lower... than when DFO does them....(the lower number means they don't have to do their expensive drug treatments) We also found out that the industry was allowed to have a 42 day grace period where the lice on their fish could be unlimited, because DFO and salmon farmers all know that none of their drugs are working on eliminating the sea lice...that they chose to pick that 42 day period when juvenile wild salmon were on their migration journey past the farms is no small coincidence, and a death sentence for our wild fish...the corruptness in all of this stinks more than a tub full of dead farmed fish...it seems salmon farmers all over the world are having this exact same sea lice problem, and are under reporting them as well, but at least some of them are being fined (maybe enough of a fine could make a land based facility look attractive) but here in Canada, we bend over backwards to ensure the death of our wild fish and fouling of our entire coast, we allow them a 42 day grace period and zero fines...it's so insane, that one wonders if the Salmon farm industry and it's strong hold on government officials isn't some kind of Mafia, that's the only thing that makes sense See more
