nêhiyawak Language Experience Launches New Youth Program to Strengthen Cree Language and Identity nêhiyawak Language Experience is ready to launch a new program aimed at strengthening proficiency in nêhiyawêwin the Cree language among Indigenous youth and, in doing so, strengthen their sense of connection and identity. An on-going yearly program that is inter-twined and steeped within language learning will help build up vocabulary and definitely identity, said nêhiyawa...k Language Experience President Belinda Daniels. The young people in our new program will spend hours immersed in the language, a natural way of learning and a pace that will make all the difference. Young broadcasters to spur Indigenous language revitalization Rene Durocher knows he won't be here forever. Going by "Charly" on-air, Durocher is a 19-year broadcasting veteran who delivers news in Cree and Michif via Missinipi Broadcasting Corporation out of La Ronge. He's hoping a younger generation of Indigenous language radio personalities will take his generation's place as it ages.... "We won't be here forever," he said. "It would be nice to see them come on-air and speak the language." First Nations University of Canada professor Shannon Avison has started a research project aiming to close that gap.
