Did you know that allergies to cats are one of the most common among humans? Contrary to what you might think, it’s not their fur or hair people are allergic to. It’s actually the proteins in the cat’s sebaceous glands and saliva. But how do these proteins cause allergic reactions? People with allergies have oversensitive immune systems. Harmless things, like cat dander, are mistaken for dangerous invaders, and the supersensitive body attacks them as they would attack microbe...s that can cause diseases. The symptoms of the allergy are the side effects of your immune system acting against the allergen, or what trigger the allergy. Not everybody is allergic to cats, so if you are among one of these lucky people who can be around cats, share with us how you’re celebrating #NationalCatDay! @finnthelittlefeline celebrated by adventuring to the Big Nickel where he came across some pumpkins at the entrance of Halloween at Dynamic Earth!
Join us for a celebration of #DarkMatterDay with SNOLAB! Staff Scientist Olathe MacIntyre is hosting SNOLAB research scientist Pietro Giampa for a Bluecoat Talks. We’ll find out about all the knowns and unknowns in the search for dark matter. Tune in and ask your questions to our guest!
Ghost, ghouls and witches alike, Are invited to come to our Halloween night! See over 5,000 pumpkins aglow, And don’t miss our Big Nickel Halloween Show. Join us this weekend with your family and friends ... To experience spooktacular fun before Halloween ends! Tickets at sciencenorth.ca/halloween
Today’s #TBT is very special as we tell the story of one of our most remarkable exhibits, the fin whale skeleton! Our fin whale was washed ashore Anticosti Island, at the Gulf of St. Lawrence in Quebec. It was there for 3 years before we sent out a crew to recover it. It was not an easy task! Our team worked hard cleaning the rotten meat on-site for 10 days. It was then transported to Sudbury, where the bones spent several weeks up in the tailings of Inco (now Vale) to be ...dried out in the sun. But the problem was that there was still whale oil within the bones! How did we get rid of it? As oil separates from water, our team submerged the entire skeleton in a lake that was already polluted for the entire winter! Come spring, all of the oil was removed! We then steam-cleaned the skeleton before mounting the 65-feet whale in the science centre! It was a job ‘whale’ done! What’s your favourite memory from the whale skeleton?
Happy #ReptileAwarenessDay! Are you aware that reptiles play a critical role in keeping our ecosystems healthy? They are predators, prey, and even seed dispersers! Many reptile species are facing an increase of threats worldwide - including our species in Ontario - mainly due to habitat loss. Although some issues must be addressed by policy-makers, we as individuals can also help by taking some simple steps! Never keep wild animals as pets. When driving, slow down in area...s where turtles and snakes are known to cross. Be careful when excavating. Many snakes bury themselves underground in a hibernaculum (or chamber) overwinter. If it is disrupted they can freeze. Learn about reptiles to help dispel myths and misconceptions about them with your family and friends. Help spread the word! What is your favourite reptile?
