This painting, entitled "Polar Effigies" (2017) was created by the Sedna Epic Expedition's esteemed advisor and artist Diane Fiedler. This beautiful piece is part of Diane's continuing art-in-landscape and photography series showing oversized watercolours of polar bears floating in glacial waters or interacting with the human environment in Greenland and Nunavut, Canada.

Covid-19 restrictions have prevented human observations of bird colonies in the Baltic Sea. The absence of tourists in 2020 lead to a sevenfold increase in presence of white-tailed eagles and an equally large increase in their disturbance of cliff-breeding common murres. This in turn lead to a 26% lower breeding success of the murres. A recent study published in the journal Biological Conservation shows that tourists can actually be beneficial for bird colonies in the Baltic... Sea. The study was done by a group of scientists including centre researcher Olof Olsson and Jonas Hentati-Sundberg at SLU (who received his PhD from the SRC in 2015). During the 2020 pandemic, Olsson and his colleagues took the opportunity to study the effect of human absence on the island Stora Karlsö, one of the oldest protected areas in the world, known for its abundant bird life. Using a combination of data from CCTV cameras and long-term seabird monitoring, we revealed a previously concealed guarding effect by tourist groups on the common murre colonies in the Baltic Sea, says Olof Olsson. Sixteen years ago, the Labrador Inuit Land Claim Agreement was signed. To commemorate the occasion, the Inuit Art Foundation took a moment to celebrate, again, the major artistic output from the Nunatsiavut region with 10 Artists to Know, featuring early trailblazers like Gilbert Hay and emerging artists like Erica Jacque. Thank you, Michael Aw, for creating a such a moving tribute to Ernie Brooks (1935-2020) with a beautiful soundtrack by composer Eric Bettens. The Sedna Epic Expedition's sea women were privileged to have had Ernie (an underwater photographer known as Ansel Adams of the oceans) as our esteemed advisor and mentor. Ernie shared our passion for protecting the oceans and documenting climate change in the Arctic. He was a healer and a hero for the planet...

We're delighted to introduce the guest speakers for November 22, which is Day Two of our exciting virtual expedition to Norway's Arctic fjords. Due to COVID-19, our November 2020 expedition to the Norwegian Arctic is delayed by a year. But, that's not stopping Sedna's sea women from immersing themselves in Norway's winter herring run... April Glaicar is a circumpolar photographer and mixed media artist who was born, raised and continues to live in Hay River, Northwest Territo...ries, Canada. Her work has a strong connection to the circumpolar world and arctic conservation while embracing traditional knowledge and culture. Always creative and attuned to nature as a child (often collecting a pocket full of rocks or flowers) she had begun exploring photography and design by the time she was in high school. Over the years she has continued to develop her photography skills and learn techniques in other mediums as a way to express her experiences. It is her passion for photography combined with a love of nature, people and creative curiosity that have resulted in April’s Inspired Surroundings jewellery collection; an eclectic mix of her original photographs, fine silver and fused glass techniques (originating over 4000 years ago), other treasures including vintage up-cycled beads, semi-precious stones, local fossils and whitefish vertebrae. April works full time in her home based April Glaicar Studios to create storytelling pieces of fine art jewellery and décor. Largely a self-taught artist, April experiments with different materials and techniques and eagerly participates in opportunities to learn from other artists in any discipline. She shares art and encourages creativity by teaching workshops locally and at festivals. April’s work has been featured and sold at the ART Market in Calgary, Far North Film Festival in Yellowknife and the Great Northern Arts Festival in Inuvik where she was awarded the Viewers’ Choice award for Jewellery and Metalwork in 2017. With great pride April was selected to design and create the Cultural Medallions given to the 60 circumpolar cultural performers of the Arctic Winter Games 2018. April’s first exhibition Our True North a visual time capsule of life in Sachs Harbour and Ulukhaktok, NWT in 2017 launched in April 2019 and is available for exhibit. Her designs may be purchased directly on-line and at select locations & events as listed on her website. Commission inquiries are welcomed.
