Hi everyone. We are so proud this year to once again be sponsoring Pendance Film Festival! Three years ago we were told: this is a new film festival-- one that puts story over EVERYTHING. Naturally, stories make up our lives (and, personally, our livelihood!), and are a reason for, and essential part of both literature and film. Here was a celebration and conservation of story to the exclusion of all else, arising out of the cold Toronto winter, aiming to entertain, to move, ...and to inspire and guide new filmmakers and film lovers alike. We couldnt help but support this phenomenon. Now in their third year, the festival has grown by leaps and bounds into an absolute powerhouse. They highlight and even premiere feature films, short films, as well as the music of cinema -- which is often a subtle, but integral, aspect of on-screen storytelling. They even host workshops, and networking events, to help artists learn and to make connections in their industry. It truly is a very busy weekend! They are passionate about film, dedicated to telling great stories, and provide a huge platform and powerful signal boost to young artists and women in the arts especially. These are only some of the reasons we urge you all to go and take in a show, and take part in this gem! The festival runs from February 20 until February 23rd. Hey everybody. We have always been supportive of the myriad events that take place in Toronto, from concerts to fairs to community bake sales. However we have made it a point to remain positive generally, but not specifically promote any event in particular. Until now. One of our friends, not satisfied being a successful up-and-coming filmmaker, had an amazing and ambitious idea: why not create a short film festival, give a platform to underrepresented talent from Canada and ...across the world, and use it to showcase Torontos love of film...and hold it in the depths of winter (because this IS Canada after all!)? 64 days later, in December 2017, Pendance Film Festival screened to a packed house at the Regent Theatre, during a surprise snowstorm, on the Star Wars opening weekend. And it was a phenomenal success! Now into its second year the festival is even bigger, with 40 short films and 6 features already announced, screening over 4 days, beginning January 31st, 2019. As many of you have undoubtedly noticed, we have a whole new mural, just in time for the holidays! We would like to extend an incredible amount of gratitude to our amazing artists, who for the second year in a row are donating their art to us. Every once in a while Ill come across a book and from one glance at it I know I have to read it. It doesnt happen often, and I dont know what triggers the feeling, but I never question it - I just read. The Perfect Nanny (translated as Lullaby in the UK) is written by the Moroccan-French author Lela Slimani, and is the first of her books to be translated into English. This book took my breath away from the first sentence - The baby is dead, and I didnt breathe out unti...l I finished it, that same night. Its surprising in its complexity, especially because from the first chapter you know how the story ends. (That, and its inspired by the Krim sibling case, New York, 2012.) With surprising poignancy, the author explores subjects like class and race, the complexities and dark corners of motherhood, and the concepts of loneliness and isolation. It offers a compassionate and honest glance into something one may never think can ever be understood, or related to. It is a sad and difficult story, though the style is easy to breeze through, but its worth the heartache. #SeekersRecommends See more

Seekers Books officially has new owners! :) Patrick and myself have been working here for over 10 years, and weve been customers since our early teens. When Tony, who has founded the store in 1988 and has ran it for the last 29 years (we turned 29 in May!), decided to retire, Patrick and myself would not reconcile ourselves to the fact that Seekers could close for lack of someone to run it. We are immensely grateful to Tony for everything he has done for "the kids" over the... years, and how easy he has made this transition for us. Seekers has been like home to us for many years, we are incredibly passionate about the business, and were committed to continuing providing the community with a wide and eclectic selection of books, as well as a space for people of all views, beliefs, backgrounds and walks of life to come together and discuss, debate, and widen their perspectives.
