Happy virtual Orthodox Easter (Fasica) if celebrating! The #Ethiopian Easter follows 8 weeks of fasting, abstaining from meat & dairy products. On the Eve the faithful would have attended a church service that ends at 3 a.m. Easter Sunday is usually spent at home with families enjoying dishes prepared for the feast. #HappyEaster

You don't need to sanitize your food to protect against coronavirus, scientists say. Wash veggies as your normally do, but it's not foodborne. You can't get it by ingesting food alone. You can get it from people, of course, those who sneeze, cough or exhale the coronavirus even though they may look healthy. And from hard surfaces and plastics they have touched. Do what you can to disinfect surfaces frequently and wash your hands even more frequently after coming in contact ...with surfaces, especially suspect steel and plastic. https://www.usatoday.com//coronavirus-how-best/5046324002/ #food #toronto #ethiopianfood #tastetoronto #torontorestaurants

On Sunday, March 15, 2020 our restaurant closed for the public emergency. Delivery and take-out arent enough to sustain daily operations at this time. We may resume these in the near future. Social distancing has nearly broken our hearts. We are social by nature and we do that with food. To that end our kitchen staff strictly follow health and safety regulations, use plastic gloves, wash often, and take extra precautions. Food is cooked thoroughly and properly handled during prep. We hope to see you soon again. You are missed.

Like you, we are closely following the rapid events relating to the global pandemic. According to Toronto Public Health COVID-19 is not yet circulating locally, however given the global circumstances, they are working closely with health partners to plan for the potential of local spread. What is Selam Restaurant Doing? https://selamtoronto.com/health-safety/... 1. Enhanced our cleaning practices and increased frequency of sanitization, using industrial grade disinfectant. 2. Put hand sanitizers by front door and washrooms. 3. The kitchen staff have always used plastic gloves with our injera, meat and vegetables and are practising extra precautions. 4. We offer healthy dishes such as flax seed bowl, okra, and ginger tea. Food can be ordered for one. Delivery services are available as well: https://selamtoronto.com/delivery/ ----------------- What you can do? 1. Regularly wash hands with hand soap is the best solution. 2. Refrain from touching faces with hands and to avoid contact with people who are sick 3. Use proper cough and sneezing etiquette (use a tissue, or cough or sneeze into the crease of your arm) 4. Stay home if youre sick, particularly if there are symptoms including fever, cough and difficulty breathing. If you or friends experience these symptoms AND theyve recently travelled internationally, ask them to avoid contact with others and call their health care professional or nearest hospital. 5. AGO - Art Gallery of Ontarios Art Pick of the Week Ethiopian Art, 14001900: A Living Culture. "When we say the word Medieval, what image comes to mind? Chances are its not the cultural hotbed of Ethiopia of the Middle Ages, with its advanced civilizations like the Kingdom of Aksum and complex language systems like Geez. Head to Level 1 in the Thomson Collection of European Art (Gallery 116) to check out this weeks Art Pick, Ethiopian Art, 14001900: A Living Culture. ...In case you missed it the first time, were revisiting a close look we took last year at this collection of sacred Ethiopian artifacts, illuminating this fascinating era in the region. Ethiopias Aksumite Kingdom converted to Christianity in the 4th century, prompting the rise of Christian literary and artistic traditions. Today, more than half of Ethiopias population identifies as Christian, and objects like the ones on display in the exhibition still hold cultural significance. As you walk through the gallery space, youll see hand crosses, manuscripts, scrolls and icons that illustrate the story of Ethiopias religious rise." During their time of origin, pieces like Hand Cross, 15th century, which has careful latticework and near-perfect symmetry, and the intricately carved designs and bold imagery of the object Diptych: St. George and the Dragon; Virgin and Child with Saints, would have held great religious importance to people of the church. As you admire these items, imagine them in their previous lives, lit by nothing more than candlelight, adorning places of worship or gracing the hands of religious figures. In this video, Seeta Changanti (Professor of English Literature at the University of California) and Andrea Myers Achi (Assistant Curator of Medieval Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art) discuss these two unique pieces and explain their symbolism." Experience it for yourself. Ethiopian Art, 14001900 is located on Level 1 in the Thomson Collection of European Art. https://ago.ca//art-pick-week-ethiopian-art-1400-1900-livi

Injera is the national dish of Ethiopia and Eritrea and central to any of our meals. Its both a flatbread, an eating utensil, and the plate itself! When the entire tablecloth of injera is gone, the meal is over. Utensils are optional. To begin, pieces of injera are used to pick up bites of entres and side dishes. 1. Tear a strip of injera off with your right hand... 2. Hold it with your fingers and thumb 3. Grab several pieces of food with it 4. Eat, enjoy, repeat. Whats in it? Injera is a sourdough-risen gluten-free flatbread with a slightly spongy texture. Its traditionally made out of tiny, iron-rich teff seeds, which are ground into flour. To make injera, teff flour is mixed with water. The fermentation process is triggered by adding ersho, obtained from previous fermentations. The mixture is then allowed to ferment for an average of two to three days, giving it a mildly sour taste. The injera is baked into large, flat pancakes. The production of teff dates back a few thousands years. Teff production is limited to certain middle elevations with adequate rainfall, and, as it is a low-yield crop.

Selam was featured in Toronto Lifes article "Power Plants - A guide to the citys most enticing meatless meals." Written by Alex Baldinger and Rebecca Fleming. Photo by Daniel Neuhaus. A copy of the paragraph about Selams vegan menu is below with edits to the name change and removal of the buffet mention as it is no longer offered. "Most Ethiopian restaurants already have a food terminals worth of veggies on the menu, but Bloorcourts Selam takes it to the next level ...by making vegan dishes at a strictly separate time. The vegetarian platter for two is a kaleidoscopic combination of six items, plus spongy injera, its cratered surface perfect for soaking up all the sauces. The teff-based flatbread comes rolled up like tasty little sleeping bags, tucked between a mushroom-based take on dullet, spicy okra tibsi, rich timitimo tsebhi (berbere-spiced lentils) and an earthy beet-and-potato mixture. Unroll the injera, rip, dip and repeat. And then roll yourself out the door, full and happy. 812 Bloor St. W., 416-915-7225, selamvegan.com https://torontolife.com//the-citys-best-plant-based-dining/ #torontovegans #vegantoronto #torontorestaurants #torontoeats #ethiopian #bloorcourt #christiepits #injera #eattheplate cc Bloorcourt Business Improvement Area (BIA) Bloorcourt Village Christie Pits Living (Toronto)
