Contrasting in colour and texture - these two make the perfect pairing: Euonymus japonicus Lankveld03 - Bright, snow white emerging foliage matures to dark green, evergreen. Berberis thunbergii Concorde - deep purple foliage with yellow flowers when in bloom, globe-shaped shrub, deciduous. #selectionsnursery #supportlocalbusiness

Spring is on its way!
The first flowers of the season are out the tiny magenta female flowers and, just starting to open, the yellow male flowers of beaked hazelnut (Corylus cornut...a var. californica). Once the wind starts blowing, pollen from the male flowers will make its way to those teeny tiny magenta blossoms and another cycle of life begins.

Sometimes, native plants are not showy. Sometimes, they’re so inconspicuous that you may never notice them even though you pass them by day after day. But it do...esn’t mean they don’t matter. Take this unassuming native liverwort for example: Pellia neesiana, also known as ring pellia. Found in all kinds of habitats, from forest floors to streambanks to bogs, ring pellia, like other liverworts has an important ecological role. It helps prevent soil erosion, especially during times of heavy rain. It provides microhabitats to a variety of microorganisms and insects like little moths. And it also helps cycle nutrients to other native plants. Not bad for a little green plant that most people never even notice. :-)
Merry Christmas everyone!
Q: What do these plants all have in common? A: They all bring vibrant colour and unique textures to gardens in the fall season. Check out our latest blog post for more info on each: http://ow.ly/zD6P50x3YIz... #selectionsnursery #fallplants
When most people think of evergreens, they usually think of coniferous trees, but there are native species in BC that are evergreen and most definitely not a tr...ee. Take, for example, the two Chimaphila species C. umbellata and C. menziesii also known as princes pine and Menzies pipsissewa, respectively. These diminutive plants grow in coniferous forests, often at high elevations. How do they manage to survive the rigours of the dark, cold winter months when many other plants their size cut their losses by shedding their leaves? Researchers have found that Chimaphila species are able to photosynthesize even during shorter daylight hours as long as temperatures stay relatively warm. But they also appear to turn to mixotrophy gaining some nutrients (e.g. carbon, nitrogen) from underground mycorrhizal networks to get them through the darkest days of winter. Thats good news for biodiversity. And for the bumblebees and beetles that forage for pollen and nectar from these species. See more

The province adopted this valuable resource as our official tree in February 1988.
