We've had several director's meetings in TPL space, including at Palmerston Branch. It's horrifying that the library is allowing a transphobic event to be held there. Please consider supporting this petition.

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Society is sad to announce what is obvious to everyone, that we are unable to hold SFContario 9 this year. The main issue is money. Two issues affect us.Hotel rental has increased by more than 40% in Toronto since our first event in 2010. Membership numbers were below expectations last year, and we just don’t have cash in the bank to cover deposits this year. We need to recapitalize to come back to the convention scene. A second issue is just p...Continue reading

This is posted from Christina Carr, a long-time member of the Toronto fan community (though she’s been living in the Vancouver area): I am posting this here as we had moved from Toronto in 2002, out to BC, in order to continue working in the entertainment industry. As prop makers working through an outside shop, work is slowing down drastically again (when shows go into multiple seasons outside shops lose work as they already built the BIG/ Hero stuff and quick props are the...n built on set) and as much as we are presently applying to get on set, if a production is already geared up you have to wait until they need again. We are presently considering looking at the possibility of moving back to Toronto. I also never completely settled into the fan (Cosplay/Maker) community out here. The way Vancouver (and most of BC ) functions as a geek community has left us with more friends and fellow makers down in Seattle then here North of the border. Even Makerfaire was cancelled here and when I agreed to run an ICG based Masquerade/Cosplay for VCon one year and then FanExpo Van on another year, it was an extremely stressful situation filled with remarks about how different BC has to be. I’m realizing that I can’t give this province what it is asking of us and that depresses me. With most conventions and geek events turning to geek themed burlesque, it’s beginning to feel very isolating. If we wind up moving back I’d like to have already reconnected with the community back there. I’d like to have up to date knowledge of conventions, activities and groups. Meet new folks we haven’t yet and reconnect with those who already know us, using the power of the internet. I’m hoping before any move can happen, we make it back a few times to connect with work and make sure we’re better prepared then we were for the move out here. If you wish to look at us you can find us via: Etsy, Instagram, and Facebook as CarrHunger Twitter and Periscope as CarrHunger_ccmh Thank you and look forward to seeing what’s happening back home. Christina and Martin CarrHunger Also feel free to put your IDs in the comments of this post so we can peek in on you and connect.

We are shocked and incredibly saddened to have to tell you that the science fiction community has lost our previous Editor Guest of Honour Gardner Dozois. He will be very much missed.

CNN headline reads "@NASA's planet hunter launched." I'm imagining this:
