** TODAYS EMERGENCY ** This sweet girl came in with a LARGE abscess covering over 60% of her of her neck. It was the equivalent of 2 softballs. The abscess and swelling was starting to cause her issues swallowing and breathing so she was rushed into the clinic by the amazing RCMP members. ... Mellie (we have named her) was immediately sedated and had the abbesses drained - she is going to stay in clinic on IV antibiotics and to be closely monitored in hopes her breathing and swallowing improve. *video of draining in comments - WARNING GRAPHIC. ** TODAYS RESCUE ** 3 puppies suffering BADLY from mange. We are so happy they are coming into our care, without treatment and their current hair loss we don’t know how much longer they would make it through the winter. They have a LONG road ahead - but we will be with them every step of the way!! ... 3 more unwanted dogs, including one with most of it’s paw missing! A few days ago we posted about these 4 semi feral kittens and the special homes they were looking for and we just wanted to show you how amazing they are doing! They first came in during our feral cat clinic having never been touched by humans before but we wanted to try rehabilitating them to be indoor cats as opposed to barn cats as we don’t like to send kittens to barn homes unless they absolutely can’t be tamed. These kittens are a prime example of what LOVE, PATIENCE... & ACCEPTANCE can accomplish. Sometimes when we walk up to them they hiss and back up as if they’ve momentarily forgot they were living the GOOD LIFE now but as soon as they get that human touch they are purring and comfortable. These kittens are available for reduced fees of $100 each (regular $150) and are fully vetted. They need to be adopted in pairs or adopted to homes with another friendly cat or kitten. ** FOUND GOAT ** This goat, who we have named Helen, was dropped off in our care late last night after being found in the middle of the Hwy north of Stettler. We immediately knew she was not ok, as she walking into the sides of our trailer and coughing. ... We loaded her up first thing this morning and took her to the vet. She is suffering from a severe chlamydia infection which has caused her blindness (33% chance we can fix it with antibiotics for her to regain sight, but its been going on a long time). she also has a terrible case of pneumonia and is infested with lice. We think its a blessing she found us so we are able to give her the help she needs. Owners are still welcome to come forward. She is currently staying at a foster farm without any goats as she is very contagious. #passion #purpose #progress

** PLEASE SHARE ** Today we received a call from a kind lady in Mirror Alberta who found a stray dog CLEARLY in distress. She brought the dog to us and we immediately took him to the vet. We named this poor old guy Albert.... The vets report: Albert is SUPER dehydrated and malnourished. His radiographs are clear and his blood work is excellent for how awful he looks, he is VERY SKINNY. The only thing is that he has hepatic lipidosis from being starved. I've got him on a high fluid rate and I am going to slowly ramp up his diet to normal over the next week to prevent refeeding injury. So to summarize he needs snacks and love to recover. This dog has no microchip or tattoo. If you know who owns this dog, or owned this dog at one time, please let us know. This is the SECOND neglected senior dog in the last few days. Any help for his and Ethels care is greatly appreciated! ** JAKE ** This sweet old man came in 3 days ago to the vet clinic, he was presumed to have been hit by a car. At the time he was unable to walk. After some pain meds and love he started to walk around and wag his tail! ... He was not hit by a car, he had just given up on life, thankfully we were able to show him life was still worth living. He is now in a forever foster home to live out the rest of his days #passion #purpose #progress

This donation was made in memory of their mom Ann Dowhaniuk who left this world too soon due to breast cancer. ... ** THE REST OF THIS WEEKENDS RESCUES ** 1. A little pup with a funky paw. We aren’t sure if she was born that way or injured as a younger pup. It will require amputation of the leg as she doesn’t walk comfortably on what is left.... 2. A VERY pregnant, VERY large girl, who is a little timid. She is headed to foster to have her LAST LITTER inside a home where it is safe and warm. 3. A stray pup 4. A mom and her two pups. Mom will be spayed and returned to her home as part of our SNAP program. 5. Last but not least, this skinny boy who has some festering quills up his nose. ** MEET MILLIE ** We got a call about a very skinny stray with quills. We headed out yesterday but the minute we approached her she took off. Today we came back with a new plan in place, a trap and some yummy food, and we caught her!! ... As soon as we opened the trap she was a whole new dog. The amazing team at Central Veterinary Clinic was able to accommodate his amputation in a matter of hours so that he can be comfortable as soon as possible! *** MELMAN - ADOPT ME *** Did you know it’s a semi proven fact that ORANGE KITTIES are the MOST AFFECTIONATE??? That is 100% true in Melmans case!... This boy is SO SWEET- if you’ve got the endurance to pet him allllll day he will be right by your side accepting those pets. He’s quite a large kitty and so beautiful. When he came into care he had been living outdoors and he’s not loving life in a cat condo at the shelter. This boy wants to BE SET FREE to his forever family. He would be great on a farm or acreage as an indoor/outdoor kitty but we believe he would also do just fine in town with a family as an indoor cat. He doesn’t seem to love the other cats in his room but we can’t tell if that’s because quarters are just too tight, because he’s a cat or because he doesn’t love other cats. There were a lot of other cats at his previous living situation (though that was outdoors with space) so we think it’s likely the tight quarters, but he just may not be a cats cat Melman is about 2 years, neutered, vaccinated, microchipped & dewormed. ** GOLLUM UPDATE ** We now call this little sweetheart Lupin!! He has taken to the good life prett easily!... He was able to undergo his neuter this week and in another couple weeks he will have a major dental surgery as he has several teeth that need extractions. He is currently still on antibiotics, special baths, and medications to help soothe his itchy skin. We look forward to continuing to see this little man flourish!! #passion #purpose #progress

** BABY CLEM ** This little nugget, Clementine, is fighting for her life in the care of Animal Emergency Hospital. She was dewormed and had a HUGE worm burden, especially for her age, this caused her to have diarrhea and decreased appetite. She started slipping away from us. ... We rushed her into an exploratory surgery thinking she had suffered an intussusception. We knew it was an expensive and high risk option to take as she was so tiny to undergo surgery but she survived! Thankfully she didnt have an intussusception, just VERY angry intestines. She is now being managed on a feeding tube and IV fluids. Please keep her in your thoughts and send all of your positive energy her way!! This is the sweetest little girl and we cannot bear the thought of not being able to watch her grow and flourish Exploratory surgery and round the clock care is very expensive - but we will always fight for a dog that still has the will to live. **** ZEPHYR - ADOPT ME *** We asked Zephyr to rock his best Blue Steel this morning so we could make a cute adoption post about him that captures his kind soul... he was shocked ... as you can see But he almost nailed it right ? ... ZEPHYR may be hard to photograph but he is EASY TO LOVE This sweet boy flops right over when you open the door to his enclosure and hes instantly purring. Hes been good towards the other cats and we dont think he would mind the company of a well mannered dog. Hes a petite 2 year old male, neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed and his adoption fee is $100. He does need frequent ear cleanings right now as his ears seem to build up and we cannot say if this will stop or be an ongoing thing. He sits amazingly for his cleanings though, no issues there. ** YESTERDAYS RESCUE ** We brought in a VERY skinny mom and her 7 babies. Also a kitten that appears to have fallen out of a vehicle. He was rushed in to surgery and thankfully his eye could be saved. He also had to have his lip sutured down as it had all pulled back.... *** CAT OF THE WEEK *** We have so many cats in care and weve decided to reintroduce Cat of the Week to focus on some of our mature cat residents. MEET FRANK aka Frank the Tank ... This big ol boy is 3 years old though he has the demeanour of an old man. He LOVES to be outdoors but he also LOVES human affection. His ideal home would be a place with a catio or an acreage setting where he could be indoor AND outdoor safely. He didnt get along well with the cat in his previous home but we dont know who didnt like who however an only cat home or a home with lots of space if there are other cats would be ideal. He really does give the best snuggles and he loves to greet everyone that enters the cat room. Right now as cat of the week Franks adoption fee is reduced to $50. *** JEWEL & SASHA *** (Jewel Adopted ) These two sisters are seeking SEPARATE adoptive homes. They have lived together the past 4 years of their lives but it has not been a beneficial relationship to either. If you havent heard of Littermate Syndrome- these sisters are exactly what we are talking about when we mention it, its why we do not adopt out littermates to live together. ... What is littermate syndrome? Studies have shown that behavioral issues may arise during the key development periods because the puppies deep bond impedes their ability to absorb and grasp information/training/skills leading to impaired coping mechanisms later on. In short - their ability to make their own decisions does not exist since they are so heavily reliant on their sibling. Signs include fearfulness of unfamiliar people, dogs, intense anxiety when separated even briefly and difficulty learning basic obedience skills. In some cases the two dogs will fight incessantly. We could tell from day one that Sasha & Jewel did not in fact enjoy the company of each other but they still acted like they needed to be together. We are SO HAPPY we have them in care and we were able to separate them to work on their individual abilities because WOW they are surprising us every day! Now they are ready to start their own lives ! JEWEL (on the left) is SO SMART and eager to learn! She has picked up her basic commands so fast and our staff is really enjoying watching her grow every day. She is going to make someone SO HAPPY! SASHA (on the right) is having a slower time creating strong bonds with humans but is AS SWEET AS CAN BE. She just needs a home that is ready to work on that bond through patience and persistence. She is looking for someone to give her the confidence to know she can make decisions on her own. These girls are 4 year old King Shephard/Lab mixes. Both are spayed, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped and have started their basic commands and crate training. They are both READY FOR ADOPTION. They recently received a day of pampering from Lavish Paws Grooming in Red Deer as they both came in quite matted and they are LOOKING & FEELING AMAZING THANK YOU LAVISH PAWS! They have lived in an acreage setting previously but could easily transition to city living as they are doing so great at the shelter but would also be just great in a country setting. A lot of people are intrigued by the thought of owning a mini pig or a teacup pig because the thought of a wee little piggy that lives in your house does sound adorable. UNFORTUNATELY THEY DO NOT EXIST- WE PROMISE YOU Pigs that grow into Fudges size keep being bought as babies and as they grow and grow and grow they can no longer be an indoor pet. And then where do they go? Theyve become accustomed to living indoors with their families and now they have to be thrown out/sent to slaughter after knowing the love of a human. PLEASE do your research before bringing ANY PET into your home. Luckily we were able to take Fudge in and he was able to live in the same pen as our Sanctuary pig Harry (who we unfortunately lost last year). Because pigs are SO LARGE its not easy to introduce new pigs to each other to live in tight quarters for fear of the damage they could do to each other and their surroundings should they not get along. Because Fudge was so young we got lucky being able to incorporate him into the pig pen. He enjoys his daily belly rubs, bathing in the mud and just lazing around. And we are so happy that we could give that to him. He shares his pen with our little potbelly pig duo Otis & Ophelia. They spend their days doing just the same as Fudge with a little more snorting and romping around. Pigs are such SMART animals and if anyone ever gives us a million dollars we would be sure to spend that on some more pig pens to be able to rescue more! She is SMART and a quick learner and because of her energy levels that can be an undesirable combination if she doesnt get the physical and mental stimulation she needs daily. ** SUNDAY RESCUES ** Despite how desperate we are for a day off; the animals need us.... 1.) face and mouth FULL OF QUILLS... 2.) massive abscess under neck starting to impede breathing and a broken femoral head (will need an amputation this week) 3.) face full of quills and a partially amputated (but healed now) foot. Likely caught in a snare. ALSO needs all of his incisor teeth removed due to excessive damage. Surgery will be this week. 4.) and a healthy () litter of pups. ANY help is greatly appreciated - we spent 57 thousand in vet bills JUST LAST MONTH! We are struggling to continue at this pace - as we are left in a deficit monthly; but the animals NEED US! **** MOOSE- ADOPT ME !!!! *** Our boy Moose spent the week saying goodbye to all his friends as they allllll got adopted this week. He said goodbye to his kids June & Johnny as they went off to their forever homes this week. ... He said goodbye to his lady friend earlier in the week as she went off to her forever home. And then today he said goodbye to his shelter bestie Cowmoo as he found his forever home today! And now hes feeling a bit lonely He landed up in our care after him and his entire family had a run in with a porcupine and their owners were unable to afford the medical bills as this was a recurring incident. Moose thought he would make friends with the neighbourhood porcupine but it just wasnt going his way. We are all smitten with this handsome boy and we are determined to find him his forever home now! Hes been such a good boy in our care and seriously you are missing out not having him in your life. Moose is approximately 2 years old, knows his basic commands, has a start on crate training and walks great on leash. He can be selective to some dogs BUT he also gets along AMAZINGLY with some dogs. Hes had a few buddies here at the shelter and has been super playful with them. His best doggy companion would be another dog around his size with good social skills. Moose seems to want to chase cats do a cat free home would be best. He came from a home where there was children around and he LOVES people so much.
