MIDNIGHT DEER RESCUE! It is very unusual to be able to even approach an adult deer. This girl is part of a very special herd. Living on a peninsula in the Kawartha's they have never had to fear humans. When this doe got into trouble, she actually let humans help her. With her leg stripped from being caught in a fence, this beautiful doe lay beside cottager Phil while he called desperately for help. Already late in the night, our SOH friends responded. A horse trailer with... cameras was hooked up and hauled to the site. Our girl was loaded and trailered back to SOH where she is treated immediately for myopathy and trauma. Tucked in a little hut in our deer pen, she is safe, but still critical. Her leg is very badly torn. Dr Cliff & Dr Sherri are discussing surgical possibilities while we battle to keep the limb alive and healing. The true miracle in the story is the fact that this doe is allowing us to treat her. Let's hope together ... that we can save this life ... https://www.shadesofhope.ca/donate.html

LET'S GO!! It's Auction Time and this is today's feature!!!

ANOTHER GREAT RELEASE! Returned to Whitby this week, a beautiful Barred Owl is now free after recovering from a collision injury. SOH has received many owls into care this Fall. Please be careful out there. Our wildlife is on the move. Do not throw litter out of your car windows! It attracts rodents which in turn put raptors and other animals at risk as they focus on prey and not the traffic.... (Great pics by Ann Brokelman!)

GARTER SNAKE PATIENT This young snake was found by a dog who thought it might be a toy. Quickly scooping up the injured animal, the dog owner rescued the little snake and brought him to SOH. As a result of the dog bite, the snake had a significant deviation in his spine and an open puncture wound. Our medical team cleaned and sewed him up and we hoped he would respond well to treatment. Many weeks later ... our little patient is well healed and good to go! He has just been returned to a garden where he will settle in for the winter and then be ready to resume garden pest control in the Spring. https://www.shadesofhope.ca/donate.html

A NORTHERN PATIENT Arriving all the way from Sudbury, Ontario this beautiful fox is recovering from both a fractured leg and arm! It is assumed he was hit by a car but quick acting rescuers got him to Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre in Sudbury. They engaged a local vet hospital to splint his legs and then had him transported to SOH for further assessment and care. There is a long rehab ahead for this guy but so far, he is enjoying a plentiful supply of food and the comfort of a safe place to hide. Here's hoping the weeks ahead will bring continued healing and improvement. https://www.shadesofhope.ca/donate.html

DOUBLE TROUBLE... .......for these raptors yesterday. This Great Horned Owl came in with a trap attached to its toe. This type of trap is inhumane, and as shown, often does not catch the intended target. The toe is broken and a great deal of damage was done to the toe itself. It was left in pain, unable to fly or hunt for an unknown length of time. These guys need their toes to be successful in hunting and we are hoping to be able to save it. This Red tailed hawk was sh...ot by a pellet gun and the ulna (a bone in the wing) has been fractured. This type of gun is usually used by kids and it is powerful enough to do damage but not usually to kill directly, leaving the animal to suffer horribly. We get many patients with this type of bullet in them. Because of where this hawk's fracture is, it is uncertain whether he will fly again. He will need to be in care for several weeks. Both of these patients would benefit from the new pen extensions we are building. To help us with this, please visit this link to our building fund. https://www.canadahelps.org//shades-of-hope-wildlife-refu/ See more

DID YOU KNOW .. . ... that the magnificent talons of the Osprey are unique among raptors. As fierce fishing birds, their talons contribute to their success. As they reach into the waters to capture their prey, the outer front toe swivels to the back to create 2 grasping toes at the front and back! Isn't nature amazing!? We hope that our Osprey patient will return to the skies and waters soon. In the meantime, we are catching the fish for him!

HOME FREE These coyote pups came in a few weeks ago suffering from mange. They were very thin and had very little fur. With medicine, shelter and food they came along nicely and were returned home yesterday ready for the upcoming colder weather. Although mange is totally treatable, many animals die from the effects of the parasitic mites in an excruciating fashion...usually starvation and/or infection. These guys would never have survived the winter without treatment. F...oxes and coyotes especially are difficult to catch unless in a very weakened state. We see several of these every year, and it is always rewarding to watch the amazing transformation once treated. If you know of an animal suffering from mange, give us a call and we will do what we can to help you through the process. Please donate to our building fund to give patients such as these access to better shelter - including much needed fresh air. https://www.canadahelps.org//shades-of-hope-wildlife-refu/ See more

WE ARE PUZZLED... As to how this red tailed hawk ended up hanging from a tree in Markham Ontario. Luckily, in sight of a busy road so it was eventually spotted, this beautiful bird was upside down struggling to free itself from a rope tied and knotted to its leg. The rope was either tied to or tangled in a branch of a tree, making it impossible for the hawk to break free. Brought to us, it had a swollen leg, but fortunately no fracture. In addition it had a badly injured ...eye - probably from its struggle. It appears this hawk was being kept illegally, and was either tied to the tree or it fled its captor and became tangled after its escape. This is being investigated by the MNRF, so if anyone has any information on this, please contact them. This hawk is still in care, and would have benefited from the new outside runs we are planning through our building fund. Please donate so that this hawk and other adults in care can benefit from less stress, more space and fresh air. "IN TRAINING" These baby opossums are training hard for their first marathon to raise money for our building fund. The first little guy has it down pat and just has to build us his speed and stamina. The second ones need a lesson in team work, and have a little more practice to do. Please encourage them by sponsoring them for our building fund. They don't need you to give a lot.....just the cost of a smile. PLEASE reward their efforts! Go to https://www.canadahelps.org//shades-of-hope-wildlife-refu/

AGAIN???! A few days ago, we received a trumpeter swan who had been a victim of people’s warped idea of a good time. This swan had been run over by an ATV, and it appears that it was not an accident. This female swan and her mate suffered the loss of 3 signets last year due to the apparent game of trying to chase down and hit them. Although the Ministry of Natural Resources investigated, they could not find the culprit(s) and the best that could be done was to lower the ...speed limit to 20 mph through that stretch of trail. This mother and her mate were raising 8 signets this year, and again was the target of this cruelty. It is beyond our understanding how anyone gets pleasure out of such an act, and it is painful to repeatedly see the victims of carelessness and outright brutality in so many of our patients and especially in a species that not long ago was on the brink of disappearing from our skies. This swan was 13 years old, and suffered 2 broken legs. Dr. Cox from the National Wildlife Center rose to the challenge and her legs were pinned in the hopes that in 2-3 days she would be able to stand and eventually be able to rejoin her family she had done so well at raising. After a grueling 3 hour surgery, with her legs pinned, it was heartbreaking when this poor girl could not recover from the anesthesia. She had just been through too much and could fight no longer. We are also saddened to report that we lost Luna, the trumpeter who had been shot and was suffering from lead poisoning. Two successful breeding females who have contributed greatly to our having the honour of again observing these beautiful birds in our waters are now gone. Please contribute to our building fund to provide these and our other patients the best facility possible to reduce their stress and provide optimal care. We are at 5200 patients for the year and counting. https://www.canadahelps.org//shades-of-hope-wildlife-refu/ . See more

TAKE THE PIERCE CHALLENGE On a lighter note, to mark already surpassing the 5,000th patient for 2020, we are showing you that wildlife have personality too. A baby porcupine showing off and playing as you have probably never had the privilege of observing, likely leaves you unable to hold back a smile. Pierce, being an orphan and coming into care at only 3 or 4 days old is no longer stressed by people and activity. But many of our adult patients are horribly stressed, r...esulting in slower recovery and sometimes even death. Pierce is sooooo excited and can’t wait to help them out. She wants you to be excited about improving our patients’ stay and speeding healing with our plan to give them an outdoor area to get away from the daily stresses and essential activity in the building. Pierce’s challenge is that if you can’t help but smile, that you support our building fund even if it is only with the cost of a cup of coffee. If you don’t smile even a little, then you win. WARNING.....you will likely need this link! https://www.canadahelps.org//shades-of-hope-wildlife-refu/

CRUELTY OR CARELESSNESS?? 3 VICTIMS ON THE SAME DAY.... This adult loon was tangled in fishing line and had a hook in its wing. It couldn't dive or fly, so was starving to death. When someone finally managed to get it untangled, it was too weak and had eaten pebbles in desperation, filling his stomach. These pebbles will require removal if we can get it stable enough for surgery. Patient #2 was a baby loon, which had been chased down by a boat and had suffered egregious i...njuries to his legs by a propeller. One leg was broken with significant wounds and the other leg had suffered a major and quite possibly un-reparable wound to the foot. Apparently this is 'sport' on some lakes. There are even reports of people sending their dogs into the water to chase the babies down. Patient #3 is a female Trumpeter Swan. Examination showed that she has been shot at some point, with at least 7 pellets in her and an extremely high lead level ....which may be fatal. She has a family consisting of a mate and 4 signets who are grieving horribly with the loss of their Mom. She is being given chelation therapy via IV in the hopes that she can return to her family at some point soon. All of these patients are requiring intensive care (IV fluids, medication, oxygen, blood draws etc) and are extremely susceptible to stress. They would benefit greatly from a quiet space away from the activity involved with the care of the dozens of other patients. It is cases like this which have made us recognize the absolute need for an ICU space in our adult care building which offers these victims of people's carelessness or outright cruelty a better chance of survival. PLEASE help us make this a reality by donating to our building fund at https://www.canadahelps.org//shades-of-hope-wildlife-refu/

DUCKS & GEESE So far this year, SOH has raised 323 Ducks & Geese and well over half of these have already be released back into their natural habitats. Our last building project was a waterfowl enclosure and without it, we would have been in trouble finding room for the increased number of water birds this year. Please support our newest expansion plan so that we can continue to provide the best of care for the very many animals we receive every day! SHARE & DONATE!! https://www.canadahelps.org//shades-of-hope-wildlife-refu/
