Happy New Year! Just completed my first workout of the year 2021 This year, I am finally entering a phase of training I have worked nearly a decade to get to. Athletic explosive movement with agility. Growing up I was very athletic. However, I took movement for granted. I was blessed with great genes and was fortunate to grow up in an era where kids were very physically active and spent large parts of the day outdoors. One of the biggest regrets of my adult life was... abandoning my passion for athletic movement since my early 20’s. I have been chasing after youthful movement since my mid 30’s. I have always had a youthful spirit. However, quality of life cannot be measured by how young our hearts feel but how youthful we move. My fitness journey was complicated filled with challenges, realizations. hit & misses, failures & successes. It is because of the complexity of my journey & the lack of real science based knowledge in mainstream fitness & social media that propelled me into the fitness world. I represent a different category of fitness. The revolution. Everyone has their own fitness journey specific to their own bodies and individual life experiences. I share my story not to establish a sense of superiority, I share my story to give individuals an insight of the realness of the struggle involved with getting healthy in a world that has become a dismal, sedentary, voyeuristic existence, where we sit around and watch what seems like people experiencing life to the fullest. Social media tends to over simplify fitness, health & movement. Not enough people tell their stories in real time. Because reality doesn’t sell on social media, instant gratification does. Your health & fitness journey cannot be defined, designed or prescribed by a mere social media influencer. Your health & fitness journey is a complex dissection and interrogation of your life & how you’ve lived & how you want to live. What’s part of your morning routine? For me, it’s peace and quiet. I don’t like starting my day rushed. I actually love to wake up earlier than everyone in my household to simply enjoy ‘quietness’. I have been a mother for a 1/4 century now. One of the things I yearn the most is actually silence. Over the years I have also come to realize I am most creative in the wee hours of the morning. Therefore I choose this time to do mostly things that enrich my spirit and soul. Nouris...hment is part of that. No. 2 on my list is fuel. My morning fuel is very important. My type of fuel is determined by my activities for the next couple of hours. Working out with my coach this morning, so I am carb loading a bit. 1/2 cup of basmati rice. 1 cup of brown lentils, 2 eggs and a little leftover salad from some food we ordered a day ago. I have recently begun perusing a different style of training so I will need lots of fuel. As Personal Trainers, we hear a lot and we mean A LOT of stories and reasons (excuses) as to why people can’t come to the gym and exercise for their body & mental health and well being. Lack of time, motivation, etc. Our favourite story is about SWEAT. Believe it or not many people have said to us that they want to lose 30-40lbs of fat, but don’t want to sweat at all. Not one single drop.. .... Is that even possible? Can someone challenge their body exercising and not secrete a single drop of sweat? Unless you have a condition called Hypohidrosis then it is NOT possible and you are most likely to sweat a lot or a little depending on your body. Sweating is a way of your body to cool itself down, among other physiological functions. This leaves us no choice but to urgently educate individuals about exercise and the physiological processes of the body during activity/exercise. Exercising is not easy. We have to work hard for your goals. It’s a commitment to our lives. Exercise is not comfortable most of the time, as we need to challenge our body to a certain degree. Make sure to always educate yourself in regards to what you want to accomplish. Posting my breakfast a little late. My first meal of the day consisted of lightly toasted and buttered low carb pumpernickel bread with fresh avocado sliced and served on top. My whole life is about fusion. To the right on my plate is a hybrid scrambled omelette/egg and vegetable bujia (South Asian style eggs which consist of veggies, salt, black pepper, tumeric, cayenne, garlic, ginger, coriander powders). Vegetables used in an egg bujiya are usually tomatoes, onions and fre...sh cilantro. This is where I fused my western flavour palate and added bell pepper and mushrooms to my onions, tomatoes and fresh cilantro. Learning how to cook, does not make you less feminist. Not knowing how to cook enslaves you deeper into capitalism. If we cannot feed ourselves then they now control how and what we eat. Capitalism doesnt care if we take care of our bodies with good food. They just want us spending our money on their food. Update on this morning's workout: For lack of better words. Shitty. Made a lot of promises to myself that I was going to crush it. We can tell ourselves a lot of things and have the best of intentions. Yet, the fact of the matter remains, say what you will, you cannot defy science. Some workouts are good, some are bad. As long as we work out right? Why not make every work out count? Why not try to have the bet workout each and every time? I take my training very seriously. My... personality desires constant evolution. My training life is no different. I am always trying to improve my training. I am constantly analyzing how can I could improve all aspects of training. The results of today's training session are directly correlated with my poor fuel choices. Although that little bit of sugar I consumed this morning spiked my blood sugar levels temporarily making me "feel', energetic the crash in blood sugar really affected my ability to stay energized throughout my workout. My burrito, which was not too bad nutritionally, was not consumed in enough time to metabolize and be used as fuel. My mind was all over the place this morning, dealing with family tragedy, very busy work load, it was hard to focus on my workout today. Scheduled a training session with my trainer @joel_shariffitness. I need focus, accountability and program design. I have been struggling with workouts alone lately. Need to see my coach more regularly. Even an advanced fitness buff like myself needs help with their workouts. I wish I could do it all, but everyone needs a coach. The side of my nutrition that I’m not so proud/proud of. Was at a family gathering last night. Guests ended up not showing up because they realized they were still under self isolation protocols from travelling. Ate as clean and controlled as I could last night. Brought home some leftovers. I’m usually at work by now but have a chill morning. (Which is always nice). Going to workout from home now. Breakfast this morning was half a small chicken burrito, sat down with a coffee... and had a couple bites of this lemon raspberry cake. I don’t eat a lot of sugar. I don’t actually have a sweet tooth. However, all of this sweet stuff is bad. Even a little nibbling here and there, can be very detrimental to your health and fitness journey. I gave up sugar in all my beverages long ago. Sometimes I feel like having a little sugar with my coffee or tea. Sugar and empty calories pack on quick. I probably consumed 10-15 grams of sugar with my tiny bites. I don’t particularly like early morning outs. So I justified my sugar intake by promising to get my workout into overdrive. Modifying how I look at food and controlling my food consumption has been one of the most difficult times things to do in my fitness journey. I am getting better at. It has taken years. Still miss my travelling days. However, also great full that I am safe and in good health. Life during a pandemic has really shifted our mentalities. Today I went back into the past and tried to recreate my experience eating at KFC in Ecuador. Im not a big fan of fast food, but I have some time to time. This is what a KFC combo in Ecuador looked like when I went. KFC chicken is served with rice, lentils and a small salad. Yup, thats right. This post really spoke to me as a mother, a women and entrepreneur who really sees the dangers of social media. Im not a 20 something or 30 something adult living in my parents home who practically has all day to take a thousand or so selfies before I make one post. The concept of whiteness as the supreme standard of greatness is not only ingrained in our concept of beauty and bodies, it is also ingrained in our lifestyle choices. Day in and day out I meet individuals who suffer from heavy internalization of racism. As a South Asian health practitioner, I am constantly approached by non white clients to help them with their nutrition. They all come to me with the same concerns. Our food. We are deeply connected to our cultural foods. Y...et, simultaneously harbor shame towards the food we eat. The sense of relief and love I see in my clients eyes when told they can continue eating their cultural foods and still get healthy is priceless. Typical cookie cut trainers provide typical cookie cut meal plans, which are based on nutrition trends controlled by marketing strategies that drives a billion dollar nutrition industry. Remember, if you want to know the truth about something, follow the money trail. Our food and food culture date back hundreds of years. Food knowledge is in the past. It needs to be preserved. Do not let the systems of power convince you that how your food looks or smells is a point of shame. You don't need turmeric pills, you need fresh turmeric root. You don't need mint tea in a bag. You need fresh mint leaves to make tea. The wheels of capitalism need you to consume. They need you to hate everything about yourself, so you will go out and purchase a better version of yourself. Havent been out on a run since end of May. I missed it. Yet I didnt get out for over a month. Lol. What can I say? Funny thing about the body, it hates moveme...nt when you stop moving. When Im focusing on my movement and my body I feel great. Nothing can match that feeling. Thats why I devoted my life to better understanding the human body as well as serve others to guide them through their Health and fitness journeys. HOWEVER, its so easy to just not be consistent with your movement. No matter who you are. The longer you prolong movement the more your body resists movement, even though it knows how amazing you are going to feel after you move. Fascinatingly phenomenal! The solution is to stay consistently moving so that we fall dont too far behind in our ability to move. In order to move well, you need to keep moving. You start slow. Even its walking 1/2 a kilometre. It took me quite some time to be able to jog. Did a very moderate pace jog. Thats my face after a 3 km jog/run showered sipping green tea as I start my day with a cool crisp summer breeze dancing around my wet hair. We only have a couple of months of decent jogging/walking weather. Get out there as often as you can. So what, I was a little lazy, and didnt go out for runs. I mean staying motivated would have been awesome, but now that I realize I need to get back out their, reclaim my path, Im going to get back on my horse and ride out. Except that I am the horse!! Lol! Wooo wee! I would love to be able to run fast like a horse!
