It’s a 2 for 1. Can’t let a minion opportunity pass me by. In my previous post I shoved 2020 out the door. As in ‘ bbye SLAM’. The upside, as always is that I did it with my husband and kids by my side. Eating molten chocolate cake. Things are looking up. I want to thank everyone who interacts and supports me here. ... Social for business is a weird space. It’s also a kinda cool gig. Since moving to online consultations and services in March I have had the pleasure of working with twice as many people as last year. My deepest gratitude for the client and community referrals. They are the lifeblood of any business. It’s been so amazing to be able to expand and work with people from different parts of North America and the world. Silver lining? Yes. There were definitely more than a few. So I tiptoe into 2021 hopefully. I wish you light, love, good health and happiness. See more

Phew. Happy and healthy 2021!

This just in. Great testimonial from a lovely client, a woman in her 40’s who has struggled with IBS for many years. I think sometimes people need to know that this is a process. There is a beginning, a middle, and an end. The goal is for it to end well, with a client feeling better. It’s hard to predict how long this will take. In this case it was 3 months. I couldn’t be happier for this very committed human. If I were to write a testimonial to her it would say Alanna was... a pleasure to work with, and an inspiration. She was curious, motivated and disciplined. Plus she kept an open mind throughout the whole process. I hope that in addition to feeling better now that this client has learned how to navigate trouble spots if they show up in the future. IBS is nasty. Nobody has to live with bloating, constipation, gas, etc controlling their life. Have you registered for my free 5 day Shift Your Gut Therapy Challenge? We start Jan 11th. Please join us by clicking link in profile Or, if on fb https://shiftnutritionandwellness.us9.list-manage.com/subsc Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

RANDOM TIDBIT OF INFO: Clients often balk when I tell them that I throw parsley onto almost anything (the husband has a few things to say about that too). Did you know that parsley contains more vitamin C per 100 grams than an orange? What? I know , it's a shocker, a show stopper really. ... Orange: 53 mcg / 100 g Parsley: 130 mcg / 100 g Um, that's more than double!! Not to mention, other antioxidants like flanoids and carotenoids. Did you know that vitamic C is an antioxidant? Your body accesses antioxidants to balance free radicals and keep you in optimal health. Too many free radicals create a condition called oxidative stress, and oxidative stress is thought to lead to a number of chronic diseases including cancer. Stir fresh leaves into soups and marinades. Mix finely chopped leaves into your salad dressings. Finely chop the stems and add to tuna or chicken salad for an extra crunch. Simmer dried flakes into a tomato/pasta sauce. Use some of the leftover parsley in smoothies (yup!) By the way, you would need to eat a lot of parsley to get to 100 g since, obviously it's much lighter in weight than an orange serving, so adding little bits here and there makes perfect sense. Food is medicine.

PLEASE SHARE... While this most definitely is my nutrition practice mantra, and gut health, specifically as it relates to our internal bacterial environment ( microbiome) is clearly one of the most emergent areas of health research these days - it is not at all a new concept. Hippocrates, famously said All Disease Begins in the Gut over 2000 years ago! Current day research findings are demonstrating a connection between the status of your gut health and: brain health (... mental and cognitive) heart health IBD (Crohns and Colitis), Rheumatoid Arthritis, Hashimotos Thyroid, and all autoimmune diseases in fact. Cancer Just to name a few. So, if your digestive health is a cause for concern, and you’ve been told that you are clear of any obvious diagnoses, so you may have IBS... please look beyond the inconvenience of it. ( and it IS damn inconvenient). Seek out professional help from a dietician or nutritionist who specializes in digestive health, to properly get to the root of the issue ( it’s different for everyone) and in partnership with this professional, work towards resolving the issue. Your gut, brain and whole body will thank you. As an example, in my experience 10/10 of my clients who suffer from anxiety have a history of chronic, and often a lifetime of, constipation. This is not proof of anything just ‘ food for thought’ as we ironically say in my biz. Lol. {Credit for quote to Dr. Marco Caravaggio - not sure where he got it from}. Please contact me to schedule a complimentary mini session to learn more and see how I can help. I’m currently booking in January. Start 2021 off by addressing your health. As 2020 has emphasized to us,it’s the most important thing we have.

Eat the rainbow. Eat lots of different coloured foods. These are all euphemisms for something our grandparents and parents have been trying to tell us all along...eat your veggies. And yet... Fibre is one of the most important carbohydrates in our diet yet most of the carbs we consume, the simple, over processed carbs hardly contain any fibre at all. In general, an avg sized adult is meant to consume between 25-35 g fibre each day. Fibre is prebiotic, meaning, it nourishes t...he good bacteria in our gut. That’s a really good thing since many digestive issues stem from an imbalance of healthy {good} gut bacteria. Here’s the problem ( uh oh) most North Americans are not getting nearly enough daily fibre. Hence the eat your veggies shpiel. Fibre helps our body with - Elimination , and helps with constipation. It helps out body balance cholesterol and other hormones. It binds to unnecessary toxins to help clear them out. It helps balance blood sugar by slowing down digestion. You don’t need to count grams, I assure you if you do one thing and one thing only - add servings of fruits and veggies to your day - you will significantly improve your nutritional status. In addition to gut nourishing fibre, Veggies offer a great source of plant protein as well. Protein is an important macronutrient. It makes up about 20% of our body weight, no is a primary component of our muscles, hair, skin, nails and internal organs. Our immune system requires protein to form antibodies that help fight infections. And if you’re trying to shed some pounds protein helps keep you fuller for longer. So, hit two birds with one stone. Eat more veggies to get more fibre into your daily diet, and rely on some of them for your protein needs as well. Check out the link in my profile to grab your free copy of my Pump Up The Protein resource list of plant based proteins in portions and grams. Looking for something different and kinda fun to have for breakfast? This one will be on the go in my kitchen this weekend... BREAKFAST ENERGY BARS... 3/4 cup pecans, chopped 1 cup gluten-free oats 1/3 cup hemp hearts 2 tbsp ground chia seeds 2 cups brown rice crisps (Nature’s Path) 1/4 cup coconut sugar 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup butter or coconut oil 1/2 tsp sea salt 1 tsp vanilla extract Preheat the oven to 275F. Process the oats in a food processor. Put the oats, brown rice crisps, nuts, hemp seeds, ground chia seeds and dried fruit of choice in a bowl. Put the butter, coconut sugar and honey in a small saucepan and bring to a boil and lower to a simmer. Cook for about 2 minutes or until the mixture reaches a temperature of 230F. use a thermometer to determine when the right temperature is reached. Remove from the stove and immediately add the vanilla and sea salt. Stir to stop the cooking process. Pour over the ingredients in the mixer bowl and stir together with a spoon. Line 8-inch square with parchment paper or plastic wrap. Scrape the mixture into the pan and spread evenly over the bottom. Use the bottom of a measuring cup to press the mixture down flat and even. Chill in the refrigerator for at least an hour. Once cool, take the square out of the pan and cut into 16 pieces. This can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. As an alternative, add 2 tbsp cacao powder. NOTE: You can add 1/4 cup dried cranberries, goji berries or dark chocolate if you desire. The above version has less sugar. Do you eat the same breakfast everyday, or do you have a few favourites? Let me know your faves in the comments below.

How many different vegetables do you eat in a week? it's true what they say about eating the rainbow. Eating different veggies (and fruit) is a critical component of good gut health. We get all of our dietary fibre from plants. In addition, there are many veggies that provide a good source of protein. Whether you are pursuing a weight loss goal, or are trying to improve your digestive health, increasing the different types of plant based foods that you consume is going t...o be of great help. How do you view self care? In my view, self care means more than just getting a massage or a manicure ( although yes please to both). To me, it’s about inviting things into your life that give you pleasure, or make you smile and setting boundaries around things that don’t. I am a definite work in progress. Sometimes self care looks like this: An incredible professional opportunity came my way about 2 weeks ago. An opportunity to add revenue and breadth of experience to my p...ractice, my business. A commitment that would be layered on top of my current work load until the end of January. Great, right? Yes. But. There are only so many hours in a day, and I am still only one person. I also know that I am open to new experiences and adventure so I nearly always say yes. To many things. And this thing - this thing was unexpected but truly an attractive opportunity. However, my client load is currently larger than ever. I could not risk compromising my ability to deliver a standard of care that I take pride in. Upon reflection, I decided that I could manage. I figured out how to access resources, including a virtual assistant to help with admin. Check. Then I had to consider if I could add these hours to my week without overwhelming myself due to family needs etc. Nope. Husband on board. Help at hand. Check. Wait. Will I be able to do this and still have time to get fresh air and exercise? To cook nutritious meals? Will I have time to get enough sleep? Truthfully, the answer was no. Not based on the hours required. So, I made a decision to let go of some other things. I will bring my cleaning lady back more regularly ( gone since COVID) ,I will put a course I was doing on hold, etc. I will make a commitment to get to bed earlier so I can get up earlier. THIS may seem precious. I know these are first world considerations. I know I am privileged to be able to contemplate it. For me though, the thought involved was a version of self care. Every goal requires a plan. I am so excited to embark on this new chapter in my business because I feel armed with a solid plan. That’s my definition of self care in this scenario. How do you do self care? Please share See more

Are these flowers gorgeous or what? Guess who bought them for me? I did! Do you do things to celebrate yourself once in awhile? Everyday? I definitely don’t make grand gestures everyday. I’m exactly like you. I focus on all the things I screwed up, or that didn’t go as planned. I focus on my missteps as a mom instead of my contribution towards some of the most incredible human beings on the planet ( ok I’m biased). ... Every once in awhile take a moment. Celebrate an accomplishment. It can be anything. Meet yourself where you’re at. For some that could mean celebrating getting out of bed in the morning. Love yourself a bit. I loved looking at these flowers all weekend because of what they represent. The reason I bought them, and the fact that I’m celebrating myself. Xo Let’s do this. MEpreciation. How will you celebrate yourself this week? PS - making time for your favourite breakfast counts.

In case you were wondering what clean eating meant or what the benefits are - Clean eating is typically referenced to describe eating a whole foods diet, with minimal packaged foods and a lean towards Organics. While technically true, our body doesn’t require this approach 100% of the time. In fact, clean eating can be different things for different bodies. Learning what your body needs, at different stages of your life can be instrumental to staying well. And yes, it can include a burger and fries sometimes. Otherwise, your clean eating regime is a DIET. Another unsustainable diet. Reach out to book your complimentary mini session if you’d like to learn more.

Where the mind goes, the energy flows... Believe it or not, we are all hardwired to lean in to resilience when it comes to our health. So, what goes wrong? Why do we succumb to so many chronic and acute states of illness?... Obviously, there are the things that we intuitively understand and know a fair bit about. There is diet. There is exercise. There is sleep. You get the picture. Some things we do not know a great deal about, but that does not make them any less important to our journey towards a sense of wellness. Join me in the Shift into Healthy Habits facebook group for a conversation with Alyssa Zobary, Reiki Master and Trained Psychotherapist, about the benefits of Reiki as a healing modality. We will discuss Reiki and Digestive Health. "Reiki is effective in helping to quicken the healing proces through relaxation, stress release, lifting of withheld emotions, and energy blocks. Reiki can promote relaxation and reduce pain in circumstances of acute or chronic illness. Reiki can help with the treatment of depression and anxiety. Reiki is simple and produces measurable results". Let's learn how. Click link in profile to join us. 5 different clients. 5 different stories. 5 different reasons for me to be inspired. What these people all have in common is their decision not to live with their status quo. To make the choice to be proactive about their health. ... To understand that if they could have done it alone they would have done that already ( I know...). Honestly they remind me every day of what each and every one of us is capable of if we live life with intention, invest in ourselves , believe in ourselves and trust the process. Digestive disease and disorders are essentially an epidemic, yet, do most of us even recognize how important good digestion is to our overall health? Do you worry about? Passing gas in the middle of a family dinner?... If you can make it through an errand like a grocery store shop without having to rush to a public bathroom? Is that heartburn really heartburn, or am I having a heart attack? Stomach bloating that is so bad your pants don't fit you properly from one day to the next, or worse yet, people are asking you if you are pregnant? If you continuously battle with raging heartburn, constant belly bloat, constipation, diarrhea, or even issues you may not recognize as related to digestion, such as excema, migraines or chronic headaches, muscle or joint pain, lack of concentration, or suspected food intolerances... and especially if your doctor has told that you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome... Experiencing most of the above symptoms some of the time is completely normal. Experiencing the above symptoms all of the time, or chronically is not normal. We become so accustomed to them, that we tend to 'normalize' them. Don't. Our digestive health is integral to our overall well-being. Please join me for a complimentary one hour virtual clinic. No special reason for this post. It came up in my Facebook memories and just made me happy. It got me thinking about the things that make me happy. I realized that what makes me happiest of all is CONNECTION. You can have millions of friends, but I’m happiest among the ones I truly connect with. This is a picture of me with my youngest daughter, about 8 or 9 years ago. My best, most happy and connected moments are moments like these with any of my 3 daughters. This connect...ion is integral to my sense of well-being. For many, COVID is challenging the hell out of this sense of connection. At the beginning of all this, group zoom calls with friends provided a novel way of staying connected. Then here in Canada the weather warmed up and backyard visits, restaurant patios and long walks helped us connect in person. With the winter months ahead, I am wondering- how do you plan to stay safely connected? I am shopping for the warmest of winter boots and jackets. I will need to get outside. Who’s joining me? Shoutout to my walking partner who will not want to be tagged here, but better get ready to GET OUTSIDE - even in winter. How do you plan to stay connected in the months to come? See more
