The entire team at Shriners Hospital for Children - Canada wishes you a wonderful holiday season. See you in 2021 :)

Shriners Hospitals for Children Canada 12.12.2020

When the hospital opened its doors in 1925, many patients stayed at the hospital for several months at a time. This was particularly difficult during the Holidays. To bring them some holiday cheer, Shriners and volunteers would visit them and entertain the patients as well as offer gifts and treats. This tradition continues to this day! Even though the vast majority of our patients stay only for a short while, some visit just prior to the Holiday season. Ladies, Shriners and generous benefactors still come bearing gifts of toys, candy, and other items to many smiling faces. This year, even though social distancing measures have been put in place, their generosity will still be present thanks to the help of Santa’s elves!

Many of our families and patients hope that advances in research will lead to new treatments that can improve or cure certain medical conditions and rare diseases. It is a long process, which can span several generations. Here at the hospital, we are very proactive in research. This year, from November 18 to 20, Dr. Frank Rauch, M.D., Clinical Researcher, is chairing the International Conference on Children’s Bone Health (ICCBH) scientific meeting on OI and related diseases. ...The objective is to talk about new research on the investigative, diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients struggling with conditions related to bone fragility. We are proud to launch, simultaneously in Quebec and in Italy, the French adaptation of "Rinascerò, rinascerai", composed by Roby Facchinetti and written by Stefano D'Orazio, who sadly passed away from COVID-19. Singer Daniela Fiorentino, www.facebook.com/danielafiorentinosingerandactress, Italian from Naples and a Montrealer by adoption, has adapted the song into French for Quebec audiences, "Je renaîtrai, tu renaîtras". In March 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic brought the whole... world to their knees. Especially Italy. Roby and Stefano have graciously decided to donate all proceeds from the diffusion of "Rinascerò, rinascerai" to the Giovanni XXIII Hospital in Bergamo, a city severely hit by the pandemic. On this side of the world, all the profits from the diffusion of the French adaptation will go to Shriners Hospitals for Children - Canada. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=R2o6UVb5tZo Composed in tears but brought to life with strength and resilience during quarantine, "Rinascerò, rinascerai" received over 15 million views in just a few days. Around the world, artists are translating the song into their own languages for the benefit of foundations in their respective countries. Here is "Je renaîtrai, tu renaîtras", with arrangements by composer Enzo Campagnoli. Artistic director, Alessandro Mercurio, directed the video. This song demonstrates a musical act of solidarity between Italy and Canada. A simple way to do some good in spite of COVID. Looking for creators! Air Canada pilots have been coming to the hospital once a month since 2017. This has been a highlight for our patients and for the pilots. In light of CoVID-19 the pilots are unable to continue their monthly visits. Air Canada would like to continue this relationship and the interactions with our patients which they have been missing. We have been offered the incredible opportunity for our patients to create short video clips asking Air Canada employees... questions they may have on anything aviation. These questions can be asked to any of the following employees; pilots, flight attendant, mechanic, ticket agent, cleaner, air traffic controller, security, baggage loader. Below are some example questions you may ask, but feel free to create your own questions as well. 1 What has been your favourite flight? 2 What causes turbulence? 3 How do you prepare the food for everyone on the flight? 4 How long does it take to load an airplane with luggage? 5 What has been the longest flight you have been on? 6 How many languages can you speak? 7 How much gas does an airplane need? Please send your videos to Jillian Barnes [email protected]! Deadline October 10 (with your phone on landscape mode)

The Fassier-Duval Rod: A twenty year-long success story! In the year 2000, the clinical application of the Fassier-Duval Rod started during a preliminary study. This original Shriners Hospitals for Children Canada innovation was made possible thanks to the hard work of François Fassier, then Chief of Staff at Shriners Hospitals for Children (SHC) Canada, Dr. Pierre Duval, who is now an Orthopedic Surgeon at Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital, and Ariel Dujovne, President a...nd CEO of Pega Medical. The surgical correction of long bone deformities in children with brittle bone disease (Osteogenesis Imperfecta) originally consisted of osteotomies (breaking the bones at specific points) and rodding with a rigid metallic implant inserted inside the bone, through the joints. This could sometimes lead to a number of complications resulting in additional surgeries to replace the rods as the child grew. Dr. Fassier and his colleagues came up with a new generation of surgical rods that could avoid those complications. They came up with an extendable surgical rod that could be inserted without having to open joints and could expand smoothly with the child a they grew. This would then reduce scarring, rehabilitation and the overall impact of surgery. The Fassier-Duval Rod is now the standard of care for strengthening the long bones in the legs and arms of children with OI and other bone disorders. It is now being used in more than 56 countries worldwide. This exceptional breakthrough has motivated and inspired a new generation of physicians and healthcare professionals at Shriners to embark on their own path of research and innovation.

The #COVID19 pandemic is presently among the biggest challenges and threats to face the world and health care is living its grea...test crisis in patient safety ever! PROMIS is a series of health assessments developed by the National Institutes of Health that we are incorporating into our clinical practice as part of our global approach to health care. These assessments will ask patients questions about their health condition and quality of life in order to collect patient-reported outcomes. On average, it takes patients 5 to 10 minutes to complete and will be collected before seeing the doctor. This information will help the care team in... developing a truly patient-centered care plan. PROMIS enhances communication between clinicians and patients, promotes self-management, and evaluates the effectiveness of treatments by quantifying patients’ perception of their physical, mental and social well being. This tool is an added support to the SHC- Canada’s mission of delivering services that are as unique as each of our patients. See more
