There's not a whole lotta places in the world where you'll see something like this! It's an abandoned radar station that was once used to track the rockets laun...ched at the nearby range. Today it's the site of another gorgeous mural. And check out that patch of blooms in the foreground. That's Northern Hedysarum (Hedysarun mackenzii) and it is everywhere! It's a relative to Hedysarum alpinum, which also grows up here and has a connection to Christopher McCandless, the young man chronicled in Into the Wild. It's believed that he ate the seeds of the plant, which contain a powerful toxin, and that's what ultimately caused his demise. Here's what I found on an NPR site: The plant in question is the Eskimo potato, also known as alpine sweetvetch, or Hedysarum alpinum. The hardy little plant grows across Alaska and northern Canada. McCandless, along with plenty of Alaska natives, had relied on the carrot-like roots as a staple. But Krakauer could find no record of people eating the seeds. The L-canavanine toxin could be why.
