Hey folks, we have a bit of a twofold post today! First off, hi! I'm Jade, a new addition to the Silver Creek Nursery crew (as of a month ago). If you've sent us emails, stopped by the nursery, or commented on our posts, we've probably met already! If not, I look forward to getting to meet more people as I delve into the fascinating world of fruit trees (and chickens). Secondly, here I am with one of our recent accomplishments: putting spiral guards on our fruit trees! It took a while but it's definitely worth it knowing our trees will be safe and snug over the winter. Just in time too! Brrrr!

Todays great debate: can you eat tillage radish?? @zackmuma tried a nibble last year and said it mildly burned his belly... but our senior field wizard Wayne maintains you can eat it... anyone out there have any more experience with this robust root? We were surprised to see Google didn't seem to have a clear answer either! #tillageradish #daikonradish #forageradish

We had an exciting morning of digging our very own rootstock! One day these will form the root systems for our lovely little trees. For anyone less familiar with the grafting process, we attach a branch (bench grafting) or buds (chip budding, or chip grafting as we like to call it!) to the stump and roots of another tree. This helps to control the size, vigour, and disease resistance of our trees! Some other neat finds this morning were some honeybees enjoying a late flowering dandelion and the egg sac of a praying mantis!

It's been a whirlwind here at the nursery. Time has been flying by at record speeds, until finally today I have a breather: we've had about a huge increase in preorders this season, which threw me for a bit of a loop. However, after hiring some amazing help, we are back on track!! I'm just stuffed with gratitude that Christy and Jade joined our lil' team; good help sure takes a load off! . The fields are finally clean and weed free We managed to get some wonderful quinc...e and cuttings from this lovely old tree that now been ripped up for a new house. Zack's chickens are chickeny as ever, and our lovely flock of meat birds are tucked peacefully into freezers. I've collected a small army of acorns - and they sunk!
