You may be surprised .... .... #Repost @andybryant_podiatrist Brilliant comparison captured here of how a barefoot running technique compares to a heel strike running technique.... When you run naturally, your foot lands under your body with a whole foot landing that springs you back into the air. When you run in heeled cushioned shoes they give you the licence to get lazy with technique, often leading to over striding with a heavy heel strike. Your bodies natural spring is lost through the foot being on the ground for too long. Your leg and foot out in front of you acts as a brake on the forward running motion. Many people ‘get away’ with this technique ... though 75% of runners report an injury every year. When you land with your foot out in front and a straight leg like the guy with shoes on here, yes, your foot gets cushioned but those forces don’t disappear. They go straight up into the next joints... knee, hip and lower back. With the leg straight out like this they’re hardly in a position to absorb shock. Sure, running barefoot or in natural footwear is not without issues... primarily because most of us have been conditioned into running techniques with heavily heeled, supportive and cushioned shoes and it can be difficult to revert. It’s all about #keeponkeepingon ... #Repost @happify As the holiday season ramps up, unfortunately so too is the coronavirus pandemic. Yes, there's a light at the end of the tunnel, in the form of a vaccine, but there's still that tunnel to get through. With the current surge in coronavirus cases dovetailing with cold and flu season, the next few months are going to be challenging. But challenges can be the making of us, instead of our breaking point. Rather than giving... in to anger or sadness at the sacrifices we'll all have to make, let's take stock. When the pandemic first hit, it caught us all unaware. Not many had a supply of disinfectant wipes, masks, or hand sanitizer. Few had a stash of books, games, and other indoor amusements to keep ourselves occupied. Over the months, between hunting for toilet tissue and talking our parents through how to use Zoom, we discovered somethingwe were clever, resourceful, and resilient. We got by, we muddled through, we got on with it. And we can do it again! Sure, it's not going to be a walk in the park (which, if we bundle and mask up, is still a great way to boost your mood), but this time we have the benefit of experience. We know which comfort items kept us going, so we can stock up now before they sell out. Perhaps we've set some goalsreading more, learning to bake, meditating dailythat we can work on turning into habits. Or maybe we'll actually schedule time to stay in touch with the old friends we reconnected with in the springand keep up those Zoom habits.
