Meet Angus Vincent. Angus is an indie rock singer/songwriter from the Waterhen Lake First Nation who now lives in Yorkton. He credits his grandmother as the inspiration for his musical career. She played a big role in my upbringing. I am able to speak my language because of her, he says. When his grandmother was going through her final days, Angus started writing poems. One of them, Angel, stood out. Once I put it to music, I heard a few people were moved by it. That pro...pelled me to seek out a studio, lay down more songs and write more songs. He released his first album in 2018, and the single, Tension, reached number three on the National Indigenous Music Countdown. That was a very defining and proud moment. It was also eye-opening. I got a nice little cheque from having that song played on Sirius and various radio stations, and I realized a person can live comfortably off their craft. Angus has started using the nêhiyawak language in his songs, beginning with the title track on his new album, Pasiko. In Plains Cree, it means to get up or rise up, he says. It’s important to me to incorporate my language, because I don’t want to lose it. I speak as much Cree as possible, for my children’s sake. They need to carry this on and understand it as well. Photo of Angus Vincent by Mark Greschner *** Photographer Mark Greschner and SK Arts Communications Strategist Sabrina Cataldo are settlers on Treaty 4 Territory who wanted to learn more about artists from different backgrounds. They were honoured to hear these artists’ stories and amplify their voices, and their work on this series reflects SK Arts’ values around inclusivity and accessibility, as well as our strategic goals around the value of individual artists and providing access.

ICYMI: June Jacobs was first exposed to textiles by her aunt when she was growing up. She went on to specialize in them through her home economics education. Jacobs has explored all fibre techniques: quilting, embroidery, rug hooking, weaving and sewing. Somewhere along the line, you have to make a choice. You can’t do everything all of the time, she says. Read more: https://sk-arts.ca/8-f/992-exploring-the-natural-world.html
