Death is unpredictable, yet inevitable. When we avoid the topic, we find ourselves unprepared and thrown into chaos when it arrives unexpectedly. When we accept... that it will come and utilize it as a teacher and reminder, we can prepare for and make peace with it. How can we learn how to cultivate peace in our minds and lives to better prepare for our final exit? Looking for a few ways to begin? A familiar story across Canada, programs are halted and caregivers are struggling: On one hand, the elderly who live at home have fared much better during the ...pandemic than people of similar age in long-term care or nursing homes. On the other hand, isolation and burnout are growing problems for both caregivers and the people they care for at home. See more

Earlier today, the Government of Saskatchewan announced the successful recruitment of two new geriatricians for Saskatchewan to help improve access to services ...for seniors. Dr. Krista Lagimodiere and Dr. Megan Surkan are now practicing in Saskatoon. The SHA has been actively engaged in efforts to recruit additional geriatricians for the past several years. Only a small number of geriatricians are trained in Canada each year and, like other specialties with a low number of trainees, recruitment has been challenging, University of Saskatchewan Professor and Department Head of Medicine Dr. Haissam Haddad said. We are very pleased that two excellent geriatricians have joined the existing ones to help provide specialized care for our elderly residents. Geriatricians are specialized medical doctors who complete a residency program in internal medicine followed by a fellowship in geriatric medicine. They specialize in treating elderly patients, who can present with complex or age-related medical needs. Read the full news release: https://www.saskatchewan.ca//2/august/25/new-geriatricians

Parkridge Centre, a long term care home for more than 200 residents in Saskatoon, hosted its annual Car Show on August 17. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ho...me was unable to host the Car Show at its traditional time on Fathers Day, but with the help and creativity of the classic car clubs of Saskatoon, the residents and staff of Parkridge Centre enjoyed seeing these vehicles in a new way and at a new time this year! For over 15 years, Therapeutic Recreation Services, in conjunction with Car Clubs from around Saskatoon, have hosted an annual event. In years past, classic cars and motorcycles have lined the visitor parking lot, and the residents and staff have been able to get up close and personal with the cars and bikes, ask questions and reminisce with the owners, and develop lasting friendships with the classic car and motorcycle community. Many residents, past and present, have been members of these communities, and it has served as a way to continue their connections with friends, and foster their love of all things automobile. Parkridge Centre Therapeutic Recreation Services would like to thank the various Car Clubs of Saskatoon for their flexibility and creativity in helping us put together this unique Cruise Night for the residents.

Care home employees in Paradise Hill had a surprise on their doorstep when they arrived at work the morning of May 27. A member of the community had dropped of...f some beautiful hand-painted rocks for the staff, along with a note that read: Dear Care Home Staff, I wanted to make something for you all to thank you for what you do every day. It is challenging and scary and stressful these days. Thank you for what you do! #FB4U@paradisehillrocks." It was a truly lovely gift from an anonymous person," said Lisa McGillivray, Director of Primary Health Care North West, who is based in Paradise Hill. It lifted everyones spirits for the entire day." Read more: https://www.saskhealthauthority.ca//Sweet-surprise-Paradis

Updated SHA compassionate care guidelines provide clarity and are more inclusive for complex care needs. They include guidelines for end-of-life care, major sur...gery, intensive/critical care and clinical care as well as long term care. Compassionate care means different things to different people, so we worked hard together to review this and come up with adjustments that still ensure we are protected when living or coming into these facilities, said Heather Thiessen, a patient and family advisor on the SHA Family Presence Expert Panel and co-chair, SHAs provincial patient and family leadership council. For more detailed information check out the guidelines on the new Visiting SHA Facilities page https://www.saskatchewan.ca//2019-/visiting-sha-facilities

In May, the SHA underwent a process to temporarily convert 12 community hospitals to Alternate Level of Care (ALC) sites to help build capacity for any potentia...l surge in COVID-19 cases and to protect as much as possible against outbreaks in these facilities. This included the temporary suspension of emergency services at these facilities. The SHA is targeting to re-open emergency departments to previous levels of service in the following nine communities: Kerrobert, Herbert, Preeceville, Davidson, Wolseley, Arcola, Biggar, Leader and Oxbow. It is expected that the first reopening will be Arcola in mid-June, with others to follow. The SHA will be working with the remaining three other community hospitals that will require additional time - Broadview, Radville and Lanigan - in the coming weeks to help update them on progress and work toward resumption of previous emergency department service levels as soon as it is safe to do so. Some of the criteria being used to assess the safety and readiness for re-opening emergency departments in each of these locations are training of staff and physicians, cohorting of staff, and minimal prevalence of COVID-19 in the community or surrounding communities. The Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (CHPCA) and the CHPCA Champions Council announce the launch of the Saying Goodbye campaign. We are calling on health authorities to implement a more compassionate approach to end-of-life visitations across Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic. While certain provinces have taken steps to relax visitation protocols for end-of-life situations, many hospitals and long-term care homes still do not allow family access, even with personal protective equipment (PPE).

Most Canadians would like to die at home or at least stay at home as long as possible, she said. So we need to do a better job of providing community-based or home-based care.
