"Making things gives you a certain joy that you can't get from much else," says 14-year-old Leila. Do you think it's time more kids get their hands dirty?

This is how to take scrap pieces of veg tan leather and turn them into lace which can be used in many ways, this scrap piece is a bracer that I wasn't completely happy with so I converted it into 16 1/2 feet of 1/8" lace to use for braiding. (You can adjust the lace maker so it cuts 1/4" lace as well by sliding the blade in the other slot at the business end of the tool) First you cut a hole about three quarters in diameter into the centre of your scrap piece so that the lace... maker can fit through, when making the cut you have to make sure that it's a clean even Circle in order for the lace maker to work properly. Once you make your cut push the lace maker through The hole and feed the leather through one of the four slots which house the blade, the lace maker can make lace from leather up to 5 oz in weight (2.0 mm). You may have to use force in order to get the blade inside the tool to bite into the leather but after it does it will create enough lace to pull on and you will be able to quite literally pull the lace off of the scrap piece, continue to pull until it has eaten away as much as it can. It may not use the entire scrap piece depending on what it is you're making lace out of but crafty folk can usually find uses for such things. Totally fun and easy to use I would highly recommend it to any leather worker who doesn't want to keep buying spools of lace for their projects, why let the scrap pile up when you can turn it into useable lace.
