Small Talk Pediatric Speech Therapy

Oh heyyyy Looking for a new way to spice up playdough time?? How about some cardboard people to dress up, or even whole scenes for kids to decorate! You can talk about what’s missing in the scene, what they’d like to add, make up stories, talk about categories (like maybe the monster only likes to eat things you can find in the bathroom!)... the options are endless!

Scategories, but make it preschool! Categories are a great way to build vocabulary because it will help kids make connections between new and familiar words. For example, you can trace some favourite toys and some new toys that your child doesn’t know the name of. Now when they hear the new word, they’ll know it is a toy and this will help create a stronger connection and help them learn the new word faster!

What’s Missing?? This has been a hit in teletherapy sessions - just turn off your video/lower the camera, remove an item and get the little one to guess which item disappeared! Snagged this idea from an Occupational Therapist I was lucky enough to work with - turns out it’s great for reading skills like visual tracking AND a ton of language skills like:... Vocabulary (use household items, or back to school tools!) Negation (what is NOT there any more) Increasing Sentence Length (one word answers, ___ gone, ____ is missing, etc..) Speech Sounds - I did this where the items all started with the same sound (leaf, lemon, light, etc...) and it was super motivating! @ Edmonton, Alberta
