Happy Holidays! We hope that everyone enjoys a little bit more down time than normal during this season and hopefully don't end up tangled-up like our elves did yesterday.

August is World Breastfeeding Month. Breastfeeding, if possible, is recommended as the form of infant nutrition by Paediatricians and the medical community. As a pediatric dental office we support infants and their families whether they are bottle- or breast-fed. Before the baby grows teeth, following the schedule for infant nutrition recommended by your paediatrician is the best. Once the baby grows the first tooth, start brushing twice a day with the size of a grain of r...ice of toothpaste, and try to minimize night feedings. Mother’s milk and formulas have sugars that have the potential to start cavities when left in the mouth for extended periods of time. Babies that have teeth and are nursed at-will, by breast or bottle, through the night, can develop cavities.

Smile, It's National Tooth Fairy Day. For our children, losing baby teeth is a big step. The small amount of pain that comes with pulling a loose tooth can be scary for our little ones, but in the blink of an eye, they have a sparkling baby tooth to exchange for a prize from the ever-elusive tooth fairy. Whispers about the tooth fairy go back as far as medieval Europe but it was not until the 1920s that the tooth fairy came to be as we know it. In 1927, Esther Watkins Arnold... published her playlet The Tooth Fairy, which spread the word about the tooth fairy to children all across the nation. This book was not only about the tooth fairy, but a book to encourage and remind children to take care of their teeth and eat healthy. From then on, parents told the story about the tooth fairy to help children overcome the fear of losing their teeth since they are promised a small reward from our fluttering friend.

Education and safety have always been at the forefront of importance for our office. We have always implemented current best practices for all infection prevention within our office. As our office begins to reopen in accordance with government regulations, you can anticipate the following changes, designed to protect your safety: At Reception:... 1. We will be asking you to complete all paperwork, through our secure patient portal, prior to arriving at the office. 2. We will be asking your permission to complete a COVID pre-screening prior to scheduling your appointment and upon entry. We ask your permission to take your temperature as part of our required pre-screening. 3. We have added plexiglass sneeze guard partitions at the reception desk to provide an extra level of protection for our patients and team members. 4. Please wear a mask from home, or one of ours, and make an extra effort to maintain physical distancing at all times. Please read and follow signage posted upon entry to the office. General Office Areas 1. All high-touch surfaces including patient bathroom, door handles, light switches, reception desk, reception chairs will be thoroughly disinfected on a regular basis. 2. Toys and magazines have been removed from the waiting room in an effort to prevent cross contamination and prevent the spread of infectious agents. 3. All of our team members are required to wear extra personal protective equipment including those at reception wearing masks and gloves. Clinical Areas 1. We have created Enhanced Cleaning Protocols: We will continue to use EPA-recommended disinfectants to thoroughly clean & disinfect all clinical areas before and after patient care. You will notice much more barrier protection in the office, surfaces covered with plastic and changed between every patient. 2. You will be escorted to and from reception by one of our team members to ensure physical distancing is maintained at all times. 3. Each operatory is left empty for the recommended time between patient appointments to allow for air turn-over. Please be patient with us as these enhanced protocols take extra time but it is for the safety of everyone. As always, we are here to answer any questions you may have during this unprecedented time. Since June 1st we have been diligently calling patients and their families who had their appointments cancelled due to the COVID19 shut-down. If we were unable to reach you please call us to make an appointment. Appointments may be made by calling 613-384-0090. As our phones may be busy please leave a message and we will return your call as soon as possible.

April showers have brought May flowers...and nice days for one of Dr. Becky's favourite things...cycling. A February 2017 analysis in the International Journal of Epidemiology reviewed 40 separate studies and found helmet use significantly reduced the odds of head injury. They also found the odds of a fatal head injury to be lower when cyclists wore a helmet. Make sure you and your loved ones are wearing their helmets when biking. Stay fit, stay safe, enjoy the sunshine! #SmileGardenDentistry #SGD

As COVID19 restrictions start to lift and some people start to go back to work getting back in a routine of brushing 2x a day for 2 minutes may be tough. Use this fun calendar to get your kids back on track. Feel free to use stickers or fun colored markers to check off brushing and flossing twice each day. #SmileGardenDentistry #SGD

With the reopening of many Ontario businesses today, some of our patients are wondering if we too will be reopening. In accordance with the Ministry of Health and our College of Dentists we continue to be closed to non-urgent dental care to protect the health and well being of our patients, team members and the broader community. In the meantime, if any of our patients is in pain or has any questions or concerns, please call us at 613-384-0090. ... Please rest assured that we do check our voice messages regularly and will get back to provide guidance and the appropriate course of action. See more

This kid was up early and has been a fussy eater recently so we made 3 INGREDIENT BREAKFAST COOKIES! Thanks for the idea Melissa! INGREDIENTS 3 bananas 1 cups / 150g rolled oats... 2 tbsp raisins or dried cranberries INSTRUCTIONS 1. Grind the oats for a few seconds to make an oat powder. 2. Peel the bananas and then mash them. 3. Mix everything together until combined. 4. Spoon onto a non stick sheet and spread out to make a cookie biscuit shape. 5. Bake for 15-20 mins until golden at 350F / 180 C. Note: As they have fresh banana they will go off quickly so it’s best to eat straight away. They can be stored for a few days in the fridge but the cookies will lose their crunch.
