Fear is a funny thing. It is something we too often reject or dismiss. Like there is something wrong with being afraid. Maybe that is why so many of us have increased anxiety right now. Maybe. Maybe if we have assurance we were allowed to be afraid of all the chaos of our present situation, maybe we can acknowledge our hurt emotion and seek comfort.... I am afraid of the chaos. How about you? It is okay to face our emotions and to seek support. If you or someone you love is struggling please reach out to your Mental Health Provider. So often trust is a topic we try to view as black and white: "You either trust someone or your don't". But what if you find yourself neither "trusting" nor "not trusting"? Blessings Today. The Birth of Jesus In those days Caesar Augustusissued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria. And everyone went to their own town to register.... So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehemthe town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to himand was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angelof the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviorhas been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a signto you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peaceto those on whom his favor rests. When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about. So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. "Am I depressed?" "Is this a seasonal thing?" "Why do I have no energy?" "I just want to lay around and eat all things pumpkin spice!" During the fall it is common to hear people talking about feeling low. Over the next months we aim to offer short clips to normalize seasonal mood change. Although seasonal affective disorder is serious, there are varieties of mood changes during the fall and winter months, and it is good to talk about these differences.... People focus a lot of energy on the want to be happy. For some reason we have taught ourselves that some emotions are more acceptable than others. And then we reinforce and teach this to the people in our lives. And inturn, others model the same acceptance and rejection of emotion toward us. But we have many emotions. And they all serve purpose. ... Emotions come and go. Emotions are intense or subtle. Emotions are methods of warning. Emotions are signals of pleasure. Each and all serving a purpose. Without the warning emotions we cannot fully understand the pleasure emotions. And when the warning emotions get stuck inside of us we feel unwell. Because, emotions are best experienced in balance, one to the other. Feel the good. Feel the bad. Release the thwarted. Reign in the ecstatic. And be present. Be a noticer of your internal world. Be mindful of your emotional landscape. Be prayerful with those feelings that are denied and those feelings that are embellished. How are you doing with big feelings these days? Two steps forwards & one step back. This year has felt more like 20 steps backwards, fell down a hill, slipped in the mud, lost my wallet, my friends, and gained 15lbs; oh... and one step forward. Some days are still so exhausting since the ramifications of lockdown. People are tired and confused. We are all clawing our way back from how this global crisis has set us back.... Today was hard for me. Yesterday was hard for me. But earlier today, as I struggled, I had a thought: "maybe as I endure this week of struggle, maybe next week will feel different": hope. We need hope. And we need motivation so that we can keep finding our footing, footing that seems all too lost; and yet, motivation carves the way for determination. Am I determined today? No. Am I motivated today? No. Am I honest about the struggle? Yip. Presence. Struggle. Motivation. Determination. Take a moment to consider how you are doing? Do you need support right now? Holding space is something we talk a lot about in the attachment world. It is very powerful when someone is present and available. Which seems so strange, we are around people all day after all. But having someone really slow down with you, listen to you, keep close to you in your most vulnerable fear and emotion, that's something. That's holding space.... Maybe your therapists holds your balloon of hope, or they are the keeper of your grief, or your heavy burden. We hold things with you and for you. But mostly we hold space when we are with you, and that is transformative. Mentalhealth is a precious thing. Please do take care of yourselves.
