Cheers to Hannah! The second lockdown signalled SA saying good bye to our Programming Assistant for the last year, Hannah Clemen. Hannah has been studying for her HR certification and is nearing the finish line with that path, and moving on to other opportunities. Hannah conscientiously showed up everyday with determination, honesty, humour and empathy, doing her absolute best to navigate a demanding role, one that required that she interpret the ever evolving directives of... a boss trying to respond to a pandemic with limited resources and big ideas. I will likely never forget that Hannah was who I was with when the pandemic became real, listening to the radio in our office, the announcements of the first lockdown, our disbelief, the feeling that it couldn’t possibly be true and the sinking realization it was. In a year that asked so much of all of us, I am forever grateful that Hannah was a huge part of our story here. Her aesthetic sense for imagery and words, her art history knowledge, and her great recipes all added to the character of SA and we always, always had time to laugh together. Thank you. ~Allison

Congratulations to Jadzia von Heymann for being the random winner of last weeks photo fest prompt, Past & Future! Jadzia captured the old and new parts of the Bruce County Museum with a great angle and a striking blue sky. She chose Little Black Dog Catering for her $25 gift certificate award. Thank you to Little Black Dog for generously offering to donate the certificate, but this is our little way of giving back to our local business community. ... Local businesses support all the great causes in Saugeen Shores through sponsorships and advertising and it’s our turn to repay the generosity in this small way. We also just HAD to share Gallery Artist Bonnie Peart Gardiner’s beautiful entry! Don’t forget this weeks prompt is Home. Just tag us with #southamptonartswinterphotofest to enter the weekly random draw for a gift certificate to a local restaurant. Some questions that have come up~ YES. Kids can enter. YES. Anyone, anywhere can enter but the restaurant you choose for your gift certificate has to be local. YES. It can be a photo taken before the prompt week but it would be best if you interpreted the prompt in the week it’s released. This weeks prompt entries must be submitted by Sunday at midnight. HOME The pandemic finds us all tied to home in a vastly different way than before. Winter tends to make us incredibly grateful for the warmth and security of our homes, but for others, brings increased fragility as pandemic social pressures rise. The idea of home is personal; it can mean our physical home or the area we live in, our heart home can be a place, a person , a memory or another country, home can be signified by the absence of one and our wild friends create homes all around us, punctuating the winter landscape. Show us your idea of home!

Southampton Arts is thrilled to be launching our new Winter Photography Festival, thanks to the generosity of Bruce Power. A series of free talks, guided hikes and workshops by local photographers will culminate in a free to enter, free to see community photography exhibition in the Arts Centre for the month of March. The twin challenges of lockdown and Bruce County winter may feel overwhelming but the stark beauty of winter beckons us outdoors for our mental and physical he...alth. Our community is graced by incredibly talented photographers who illuminate our appreciation for our surroundings though the observation and skill of their captures. From the hobbyist with a smartphone to the professional with formidable equipment, we love seeing the world, particularly this little part of it, through the eye of the camera lens. More details about the festival will be forthcoming, but we wanted to get things rolling with a weekly photo prompt! Prompts will be released each Sunday through to the end of March and entry is open to all ages and skill levels. Tag your submissions #southamptonartswinterphotofest Submissions for each weekly prompt will be entered into a random draw for a $25 gift certificate for a local restaurant of your choice. (Images will be credited and image rights remain those of the submitting photographer). Prompt #1 Past & Future As the New Year begins, we have considered the path that led us to now and contemplated a vision for that path to lead us forward. Look for visual stories around you where the past and the future are both balanced, both in the present. #southamptonarts #southamptonartswinterphotofest #explorethebruce #exploretheshore #winterphotography #saugeenshores #brucecounty #brucecountywinter

Our Final Message of 2020 ~ from the Chair of Southampton Arts, Gerald Guenkel. We made it! With all the daily Covid 19 news bombarding us at all media levels in 2020, I want to briefly review how our Southampton Arts (SA) fared in 2020; a year where change came at a breathless pace.... In three words: ‘ We made it!’ Now I want to qualify my statement be saying Southampton Arts made it to the end of 2020 while showing empathy, working with multiple local groups, exploring new opportunities, constantly adjusting to the shifting sands of local Covid policies, offering art courses outside of the traditional ‘summer schedule’ and maintaining an ‘in the black’ financial status. That’s impressive. That’s a dynamic and healthy organization. How was this even possible? First, we must recognize our Director, Allison Billings, who never ceased to weave, dodge and grasp at all potential opportunities for Southampton Arts. Allison, with the Board’s approval, has set into motion many new initiatives for 2021. Stay tuned. The staff, instructors and gallery artists all showed immense patience and willingness to deal with the unprecedented change, often on very short notice. This truly kept SA able to adjust quickly to many alterations to ‘normal’. I am proud to be part of the SA Board. During this past year the Board willingly met far more often than the expected one monthly meeting to ensure timely decisions occurred. Everyone on the Board brought their skills to the table (Zoom table), making tasks at-hand less onerous. I thank all the current Board members for their enthusiasm to tackle the new initiatives for 2021. We made it! Let’s remember, this happened by seeing opportunity where many could see only insurmountable obstacles. All is good. Yours sincerely, Gerald Guenkel Board Chair Southampton Arts (Artwork by Lynn Boorsma)

Their efforts ens...ured that the story here would have chapters to come. Particular thanks go to; Our Board of Directors Our Gallery & Guest Artists and everyone who purchased their work. Today’s Friday series post focuses on a simple blend of warm and cold-elements not so unlike this week’s weather here in Grey-Bruce. The following dish, which can be enjoyed as a side or main, looks particularly fetching atop a Susan Nichol (@susan_nichol_pottery_ ) plate. Whilst the pictured plate has been sold, she has many more beautiful pieces to choose from at SA. Butternut Squash-Arugula Salad Squash: ... 1 butternut squash, peeled and cubed 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Sea salt, to taste Pepper, to taste Salad: 1 cup cooked quinoa Juice of 1 lemon Sea salt, to taste Pepper, to taste 6 cups arugula 1/4 cup pomegranate arils 2 tbsp basil, julienned 1 tsp fresh rosemary, chopped Optional: crumbled feta cheese or 1 avocado, chopped 1. Christmas in the Gallery is open now through January 3! Ten guest artists have joined our Gallery Artists to present stunning jewellery, textiles, body products, wood work, ceramics, folk art, photography, paintings and more to you. As we move through the holiday gift season, we encourage you to carefully consider the power of locally spent dollars. Because Southampton Arts take less of a commission than a commercial gallery or store, money spent here primarily passes throug...h us to support over 30 Instructors and over 30 Gallery Artists, many of whom are small, micro businesses supporting themselves and their families while pushing income back into their communities. While Southampton Arts is a not for profit, charitable entity, we are more aptly a social enterprise that transforms the percentage we retain into further opportunities to connect people with their creative side. In this past year alone, our most difficult, we have hosted children’s art contests, created outreach art camps, given camp and class bursaries generously, supported the local food banks and other community groups with fundraising support, created advanced arts learning opportunities for local youth and distributed free art supplies to families during the pandemic. Our Art Spark kids fall session ended last week and our young artists are very, very excited to show their families and community their masterpieces! Instructor Chelsea Campbell led students through four key projects that surveyed materials and techniques, from papier-mâché to batik, drawing skills to art history mash ups, creating artwork focused on play and experimentation. While our classes have adapted to running safely through the pandemic, with small class sizes, mand...atory mask use, generously spaced work stations and sanitizing protocols, the impact of parents not being able to enter the classroom has been felt by parents and students alike. This Saturday, December 12, we are delighted to host a Covid modified Open House celebrating the work of our Art Spark students and welcoming families and admirers to view their amazing creations. Covid precautions in place. Timed entry begins at 11:00 am and runs until 5:00pm, in half hour periods (last entry at 4:30 pm). A maximum of 8 Art Spark patrons can visit during each half hour time slot, for which you must pre register. Please email [email protected] with the number in your party, if you would like to attend! This is also a great opportunity to view the classroom and meet Chelsea, our Art Spark instructor, before the winter session begins in January. Our thanks to Bruce Power for their generous support of our entire year of children’s programming!

Today’s Friday series idea was brought forth upon viewing Ofra Svorai’s Autumn II. The piece, which highlights the vibrancy of fall’s final colours, inspired the following recipe for a Golden Latte. In addition to its pleasing aroma, the beverage boasts a sunny hue owing to the inclusion of turmeric powder. Golden Latte (Two Servings) ... 2 cups milk of choice (in this instance, oat milk was used) 1/4 tsp ground turmeric 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon, plus more for topping 1/2 tsp vanilla extract Pinch ginger powder 1/2 tbsp maple syrup Optional: sprinkle ground cardamom 1. Heat milk in a saucepan on gentle heat, adding the spices one by one. Stir continuously. 2. When heated to your desired temperature, pour into a mug and top with extra cinnamon. Note: if you prefer a frothy latte, blend the liquid for 30 seconds or use a milk frothed before serving. Last week’s French Oven bread recipe inspired @brucevillage to give it a try in the midst of launching their chiropractic business in Port Elgin! Kathie Wright’s Leroy went strutting off to a new coop today! Kathie Wright Kathie’s distinctive painting style of rich colours over a dark ground creates jewel like paintings with high contrast that leap off the canvas. Her work often celebrates the quintessentially rural; barnyard denizens like Leroy, farms nestled into copses set into rolling fields, punctuated by silos. She draws our attention through her observations of the beauty of the everyday, revealing the ordinary as truly extraordinary.

Behind the scenes, one of the most valuable aspects of being a Gallery Artist for some of our artists is assessing their audience and working with staff on ways to present their work in different ways and at different price points. Larry Waters’s exquisite pen and ink portraits of iconic local landmarks always charm Gallery visitors. Cards and prints are great, affordable options...but then require framing. As Larry’s originals are framed, taking the reproductions in another... direction creates the opportunity to define a different aesthetic with the same imagery. These test blocks are about 5 x 7 and created with the photo transfer method onto primed pine. They are thick, so they can sit on a shelf, mantle or table and were designed to fit a cottage-y, whitewashed Lake Huron lifestyle look and would retail for about $50. Larry would love to hear your feedback! Would you buy something like this as gift for a visitor, friend, client or yourself?

Elsinore Swamp by JoAnn Sturgeon. As it turns out, this was Peri’s place. Perhaps you remember the eco print created by Glenda Hird we posted in the summer, called Peri’s Place, part of the Celebrate Southampton show? I imagined that Glenda had collected the delicate leaves from Peri Jolley’s yard, a subtle memento of a friend passed on. ... But today Glenda told me that she had collected the leaves on the day of Peri’s memorial service. She had come out to Elsinore Swamp afterwards, a place that Peri loved to paint, a place that Glenda had taken her friend time and again as her health began to fail but her passion for paint prevailed. Driven here by grief, she gathered fallen leaves as talismans of memory. Glenda turned those leaves and that day into a piece of art for her own healing. But then the day came that she wanted to show it, and Peri’s Place came to Southampton Arts. Where the name was recognized by a woman who had bought Peri’s house, a woman who thought It must be THE Peri, it must be my house’s Peri, it must be Peri who used to sit and paint in this garden. And so Peri’s Place, created by a friend honouring a friend’s love of a wild place, came home to the house that had literally been Peri’s Place. This is art and love and friendship and connection. This is exactly what it is all about.

Brent Henry Born in Owen sound and raised in Southampton by my mother Marian from Newfoundland, father Rory from Saugeen First Nation and my brother Brendan. I have always enjoyed creating art but started to take it more serious in my teenage years. After high school I have worked throughout the community while pursuing my love to create. Most things influence my art, from film to music, and current events to personal situations. I love expressing myself with paint but I also use video, photography, and lately poetry. Orange Shirt Day design by Emily Kewageshig - Artist. September 30 is Orange Shirt Day, launched in 2013 to call attention to 165 years of residential school experiences (1831-1996). These experiences continue to impact Indigenous communities and have been recognized as cultural genocide. The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism a...nd anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. It is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. https://www.orangeshirtday.org/about-us.html

Look, the trees are turning their own bodies into pillars... of light, are giving off the rich fragrance of cinnamon and fulfillment, the long tapers of cattails are bursting and floating away over the blue shoulders of the ponds, and every pond, no matter what its name is, is nameless now. Every year everything I have ever learned in my lifetime leads back to this: the fires and the black river of loss whose other side is salvation, whose meaning none of us will ever know. To live in this world you must be able to do three things: to love what is mortal; to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it; and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go.
