We are pleased to announce that Dr. Brian Gaffney is the Midland/Penetanguishene area's newest family physician and is accepting patients at the Bayfield House Medical Clinic in Penetanguishene. Brian is the son of local family physician Dr. Greg Gaffney. Brian attended Ecole Secondary LeCaron in Penetanguishene, and earned his undergraduate degree in Psychology and Biochemistry (French) from the University of Ottawa. He then attended medical school in both the Netherland An...tilles and Ross University in Dominica. His residency training took him to Omaha, Nebraska where he specialized in rural family medicine. Brian and his wife Justine Cooper (a nurse at GBGH), and their 17-month old recently purchased a home in the area. Brian's official first day was Tuesday, September 5. Brian has a full scope practice including family medicine, and in-patient, obstetrics and emergency department coverage at Georgian Bay General Hospital. I have been asked numerous times over the last few months about the challenges facing our family physician recruitment efforts due to the 108 reccomendations in the Georgian Bay General Hospital operational review. Hopefully this post and videos will provide some insight. Our program has been recruiting family physicians to the Midland/Penetanguishene area for approximately ten years. When we started, we were in crisis, with 12-14,000 people without a family physician. We'...ve worked hard to attract new physicians to our area, to set-up practice, take on orphan patients, and build a life for themselves and their families. Our volunteers, municipal stakeholders, sponsors, physicians, nurses, area residents and businesses have all shared in our successful efforts. The uncertainty surrounding health care in our community is nothing new, as we've experienced migration of services from one hospital to another, the reduction of beds and programs, the controversey of a secular versus catholic administration, and much more. The Southern Georgian Bay Family Physician Recruitment program is non-partisan and unpolitical. While we do advocate from time to time on behalf of our community to ensure we are eligible for provincial / federal government programs, we really try to stay focussed on our role - to be ambassadors for our community and provide clear, consise, and transparent information to our pipeline of candidates. At the end of the day, our purpose is to make sure everyone has a family doctor, now and in the future. This pipeline of future physicians is very strong, as it is the result of our Rotary Recruitment Through Education Strategy. The learners who spend time in our commnunity and hospital are well aware of the challenges we face. Overwhelmingly, they decide to become part of our medical community and become part of the solution. That is why I am so proud of the physicians who have taken on advocacy roles to save our local services. Our family physician recruitment program works 6-12-18 months into the future. We recruit for tomorrow. If we were recruiting for today, that would mean we were in crisis. The crisis of ten years ago is over. I can share with you that health care is a hyper-sensitive issue across Canada. And, for the most part, rural medicine is rural medicine whether you are in the west, the east, or in central Ontario like us. So, being pragmatic and understanding that there are challenges everywhere, we promote the deciding factors to our candidates - a welcoming/engaged community, a supportive medical team of doctors and nurses, a lifestyle second to none, our proximity to the GTA and Pearson Airport, and lastly a vibrant, modern, well equipped hospital. Excited, humbled, and proud to be awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 12th Annual Canadian Association of Staff Physician Recruiters (CASPR) Conference in Vancouver. From the nomination "Always smiling. Unflappable. Never stuck for a solution, David does not disappoint. Always ready to teach and involve others, his expertise brought a level of professionalism to CASPR and the rest of history." I am proud to share this recognition with my CASPR mentors Ginette Vezi...na Jill Cappa Barb Van Der Veen and many others who have guided me along the way. Lastly, I am lucky to work on behalf of the residents of my Southern Georgian Bay community, a fantastically engaged volunteer, sponsor, and stakeholder group, and the dozens of physicians I've recruited and supported into retirement. CASPR membership is made up of physician recruiters from across Canada whose primary role is to recruit physicians for their communities, local hospitals and other healthcare organizations. I'm an honoured to have been awarded this Lifetime Achievement Award... but my work is not done. I am even more enthused and engaged to work with our community partners to make sure every resident of #Midland #Penetanguishene and area has a family doctor, and a strong, talented group of specialists serving Georgian Bay General Hospital.
