Jimmy Hassan, CEO and Founder of Canadian Colours Kingston Foundation (CCKF) called and said, we want to help the McMullen Manor fire victims. This year CCKF launched its inaugural blanket drive and Jimmy (bottom left) and foundation member, Zermaan Khan (bottom right) dropped off 40 new blankets for the displaced residents. Melissa, our Volunteer Coordinator (top left) and Ellen, our Family Services Coordinator (top right) were pleased to accept the donation and all of us give a big thank you to CCKF for your generosity and being part of the emergency response efforts.

We were so pleased to welcome Hugh Segal, OC, OOnt, CD to our AGM this morning as our keynote speaker. Mr. Segal delivered a thought provoking presentation, Pandemic Lessons for Governing Better. He spoke about some of the issues that are coming to the forefront as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic including the fact that those who live below the poverty line are more negatively impacted by the pandemic than others. That poverty will always produce poor health outcomes. Th...e part-time, underpaid employees with no benefits often have more than one job, and during the pandemic there are fewer opportunities and less hours for people to work. That affects the ability to maintain basic needs like food, shelter and clothing which often contributes to poor physical and mental health. Mr. Segal also talked about the importance of community health organizations and how it’s been proven that the longer a senior lives in their home, the longer they live. He noted that SFCSC is a good example of social capital through the many health and wellness programs we offer to people in our community and that we help to give quality of life to seniors. He sees an opportunity now for significant changes to employment and health systems as the government builds a plan to go forward post-Covid and a chance to make positive change for all Canadians. Hugh Segal is a Mathews Fellow in Global Public Policy at the Queen’s School of Policy Studies, senior adviser at Aird and Berlis, LLP, and a former Conservative senator.
