Next weekend, Calgary-based Spark Power employee, Chris Wasylkiewicz, will complete a 100 km walk for his life literally. In December 2019, following an ongoing illness, Chris received a kidney transplant from an anonymous donor. This life-saving gesture allowed him to regain his health and strength, and he decided to sign up for the Kidney Foundation of Canadas 2020 Kidney March to raise funds for everyone impacted by the disease. One in 10 Canadians have kidney disease a...nd 15 Canadians are newly diagnosed with kidney failure every day. Chris began his 100 km walking journey on August 10th, 2020. He plans to complete 70 km by September 10th and the final 30 km over the following weekend. His goal is to raise $3,000, and Spark Power is pleased to contribute $1,000 towards Chris fundraising target. #kidneymarch We are proud to support Chris, and hope that you will do the same as well: https://kidney.akaraisin.com//KidneyM/participant/5900580

We are excited to continue to sponsor our friend, Rick Verberne from Otterville Motors for this year's racing season - and this past weekend, Rick and his team headed to Sauble Speedway: "Our Spark Power Team was excited to head to Sauble Speedway to make our debut at this track. Right off the start, we qualified 18th - we were making great progress and worked through the field driving up to the third position when we got caught up and a small wreck on lap 35 of 40. The cont...act caused a small fuel issue which made us have to pit under caution. We restarted 16th and drove up to a 9th place finish. All in all it was a decent day and we have learned a lot about this track for when we return! Our next event is September 12th at Flamboro Speedway where we finished 2nd in early July." Wishing Rick and his team the best of luck with their upcoming races! Verberne Motorsports - Real Deal Racer

Our Eastern Canada teams have been working hard on a new solar panel array on the R&D roof of Canada Centre for Inland Waters (CCIW) located in Burlington, Ontario. This building accommodates over 600 staff from Environment Canada (EC), the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Canadian Coast Guard, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police - and is used to conduct field and laboratory activities aimed at learning about, and protecting aquatic ecosystems. This array of 54 x ~300W photovoltaic panels now offsets the electricity of the scientific, critical power of the facility. As we come to the end of June, and #NationalSafetyMonth, let's take a moment to talk about safe limits and Flashover. It is important to know that you do not have to make direct contact with a high-voltage line or equipment to receive an electrical shock. When the distance or gap between a live conductor and a grounded object is decreased, the air between the two objects can become electrically stressed and can cause an electric arc without making direct contact. This is cal...led a Flashover. Safe limits of approach are designed to eliminate the risk of a Flashover and obtain the safest work environment. Workers must participate in a documented job plan, maintain maximum clearances to safe limits of approach, and use adequate procedures and equipment to protect against Flashover, electric shocks or burns. #safetyfirst #nsm #onlyzeroisacceptable

Spark Power Corp. 14.04.2020

As June's #nationalsafetymonth continues, today we discuss potential hazards of working with solar panels. Troubleshooting ground faults in photovoltaic systems can be challenging and dangerous. Electrical shock, arc flashes, and fire can all result from not only the fault itself but from incorrect diagnostic procedures. Multiple faults in a large system can create unexpected short-circuit paths - independent of overcurrent protection - with enough power to ignite the array. ... To safely diagnose and repair a ground fault, technicians study the system schematic and proceed with extreme caution, treating everything as though it is live and potentially carrying current. This includes panel frames, racking, enclosures, and hardware. All measurements, disconnections, and isolations are discussed, verified, and documented. #nsm #onlyzeroisacceptable #safetyculture

Like many other sporting events, the Racing with Autism team had to pause their racing season due to Covid-19. As southern Ontario slowly begins to reopen, the team is getting ready to pick up where they left off with Austin getting back out on the race track for test races. "This past weekend we traveled to Calabogie Motorsports Park (near Ottawa) for another test day. Calabogie is also the site of Austins first official Radical race of the season. Austin had a great day o...f practice and his car, the 'Spark Power Radical', ran flawlessly. So much so we even entered him in the club race at the end of the day. The 18 car field was mostly Radicals but with a few Formula cars thrown in. For the first time out Austin finished 5th in Radical and 7th Overall." - Jason Riley, Racing with Autism Stay tuned for more updates from the Racing with Autism team! *Photo Credit: Release The Shutter*

As June is #NationalSafetyMonth, we want to discuss potential hazards specific to 347-volt systems. Commonly used in industrial and commercial buildings in Canada, the unique 347-volt systems can accommodate more light fixtures than your standard 120-volt circuits, as these fixtures regularly require less amperage to operate. Connections and terminations associated with these systems require special care when servicing to keep employees safe from electrical shock hazards. It ...is common for single-pole breakers to create a back-feed to the circuit with a shared neutral. Accidental contact with the neutral conductor will effectively connect the person to ground, completing the circuit causing an electric shock. Remember to always work with de-energized lines or equipment treating all conductors as energized until verified and always use appropriate equipment and PPE as part of your test before touch and lockout procedure.

As Mays #NationalElectricalSafetyMonth comes to an end, lets talk about Electric Shock and Test Before Touch. Electric shocks can result in anything from a slight tingling sensation to immediate cardiac arrest. Workplace electrical incidents that result in shocks can be caused by unsafe or inadequate use of equipment and testers. Anyone working on an electrical system must consider it to be energized until tested with a meter to prove the circuit has been de-energized and... is safe for work. The Test Before Touch method is commonly used in the Electrical Industry to ensure equipment is in a safe condition prior to performing work. Here are some tips to use when working with electrical testers: 1) Calibrate Test your meter on a known voltage prior to conducting a measurement. 2) Know your Tester Be familiar with the limitations and conditions required for your tester to be accurate and effective. 3) Gear up Voltage-rated gloves must be worn during every Test Before Touch. Keeping electrical tools and inspection devices properly maintained and calibrated will contribute to the successful verification of voltages present. Never assume a system is de-energized and always employ the Test Before Touch method to ensure a safe work environment for all workers. #NESM #onlyzeroisacceptable #safetyculture

You cant have a #NationalSafetyMonth without discussing proper Lock-Out/Tag-Out procedures. Power sources that are inadvertently turned on prior to work being completed can result in serious or fatal injuries. It is important to establish a procedural based lockout process that ensures all energy sources related to maintenance or repair tasks are under control and properly locked out, and that they remain locked out until all work is completed. Here are four steps to cons...ider when developing a procedure for working on or near energized equipment: 1) Identify all energy sources in regards to equipment complexity and scope of work. 2) De-energize, disable, and isolate all sources energy. 3) The authorized individual(s) performing the duty must apply uniquely identified locks and tags that state the date and reason why. 4) An authorized individual must verify de-energization and isolation prior to communicating to all affected personnel of its completion. Communication, electrical tracing, and verification techniques may take time to develop but they are equally as necessary to the development of a successful Lock-out/Tag-out program. The steps mentioned above must be looked at more carefully prior to performing a task, as electrical systems and maintenance operations can be complex in nature.

While we focus on raising safety awareness and avoiding potential electrical hazards in the workplace for Mays #NationalElectricalSafetyMonth, everyday Spark Power remains committed to promoting a culture of safety in every aspect of our work, keeping our customers and our employees safe. Today we focus on Arc Flash. Arc Flash is a set of dangerous conditions associated with the release of energy caused by an electrical arc. This can occur when an employee is working on or ...near energized conductors or circuits, moves near or makes inadvertent contact with live equipment, or when there is a failure or fault in electrical equipment. The light, heat and sounds from an electric arc supplied with a high potential of electrical energy can cause substantial damage, harm, injury, or fire. All electrical work is required to be analyzed for arc flash and have appropriate arc-rated clothing and PPE worn when working on or near energized conductors. It is important to develop and implement safe work practices that comply with all local and federal legislation including the NFPA70e & CSA z462 standards for arc flash prevention. #OnlyZeroIsAcceptable #NESM #SafetyFirst #PPE

As we continue through Mays #NationalElectricalSafetyMonth, we take a moment to focus on a common cause of workplace incidents: complacency. All too often we dont realize how complacent we are until we have a near miss or close call. Critical events like these tend to refocus our attention on the task at hand at least for a little while. A proactive approach to preventing workplace complacency involves increased communication, hazard observation/recognition, and improve...d situational awareness. It is important to think ahead and work together to help prevent workplace injuries. Communicate effectively with other members of your crew, share hazard observations, and report any changes in scope to your supervisor or job lead. #OnlyZeroIsAcceptable #NESM #SafetyFirst
