Fog . Fog is stratus cloud at surface level. For fog to exist, moist air must be cooled below its dew point. These are the basic types of fog: . Advection fog: when warm, moist air moves over a cooler surface, can occur when wind is strong ... Upslope fog: when a moderate wind blows up a slope Radiation fog: sky clear above, ground loses heat rapidly, light wind, moist air, often occurs in valleys Steam fog: forms above a body of water, when cool air is blown gently over warmer water, looks like water is steaming Freezing fog: air close to surface is near zero degrees, light wind, small particles of supercooled water freeze on contact with a surface Frontal fog: when rain falls into dry air below, water droplets evaporate into vapour, if temperature conditions are suitable, fog forms . What type of fog do you think is in the photos? Let us know in the comments below . : @reneesmiithh See more

Multi-Engine . The Multi-Engine Rating gives pilots the chance to get into a faster, more powerful aircraft. The only prerequisite is a PPL, and there is no hour requirement or written test. . At Spectrum, all multi-engine training is done in OSR, our Piper Seneca. Some of the exercises that must be learned and practiced are:... -Steep turns -Stalls -Flight at reduced airspeed -Engine failures . It is a great way to advance your training whether you are a hobby pilot or you are working towards a career in aviation! Visit our website - www.spectrumairways.ca - for more information. . If you already have a multi-engine rating, comment down below what you enjoy most about flying the twin See more

#throwbackthursday . This is a picture of ESI from 1999! That aircraft was manufactured in 1979, meaning it is older than a lot of our students. It's amazing to think that a well maintained aircraft can fly for 40+ years, and help train so many incredible pilots! . From the first ever flight to the most recent flight, all of the aircraft's airtime is tracked and recorded. This number is called the TTSN. ESI's TTSN is 21593.1 as of today. (Wow that's a lot of hours!) ... . What does TTSN stand for? Let us know is the comments below See more

Hope Air Expedition. . From September 30 to October 4, Brian will be taking time away from instructing to lead an important mission to help fellow Canadian reach much needed health care. In 1986, Hope Air began it mission of helping Canadians in remote areas to travel to much need health care in our major centres. In 1999, financial and airline assistance was supplemented by the addition of the volunteer pilot program. Through this program, pilots are able to volunteer the...ir time and aircraft to fly patients from smaller remote communities to major medical centres. For many of these patients, these medical visits are only possible through the assistance of Hope Air. In his spare time, Brian has flown a number of these missions over the past few years. Since it began this work in 1986, Hope Air has provided over 150,000 trips to medical appointments. . In a year in which COVID-19 has dominated the news, many Canadians are finding it more difficult than ever to travel to much needed medical appointments. In order to help, Brian and a fellow volunteer pilot, Lee Arsenault, have planned and are leading 7 other aircraft in a fund raising flight across Northern Ontario and into Quebec. . The goals of the mission are to highlight the important mission of Hope Air and to raise at least $100,000 for the organization. Leaving Burlington on the 30th, the flight will touch down in Wiarton, Sault Ste Marie, Timmins, Sudbury, Pembroke and Trois Rivieres, with media access planned in several of these locations. Joining Brian in his airplane will be student Anna Rusinowski. Spectrum Airways alumnus Ted Hogan will also be bringing his own Cessna 182 along. . If you would like to follow the mission online, Spectrum Airways will be tracking the mission on social media. . If you would like to support this important mission of helping fellow Canadians to reach vital medical appointments, you can follow the link below. . https://give.hopeair.ca/fundraiser/2679720 See more

Adverse Yaw . Adverse yaw is defined as the undesired movement about the normal/vertical axis contrary to the pilot's intention. There are a handful of phenomena that contribute adverse yaw, which can be summarized in the acronym, ATGAS. . Aileron Drag... Torque Gyroscopic Precession Asymmetric Thrust (P-Factor) Slipstream . Many of these phenomena result in a yawing tendency to the left. Aircraft manufacturers have actually constructed most modern aircraft to mitigate the adverse yaw in cruise flight by offsetting the vertical stabilizer and/or the engine mount to act against the left yawing tendency. Some aircraft may also have differential ailerons, or even a small connection between aileron and rudder to aid in maintaining coordinated flight when rolling the aircraft. . Be aware that these features do not completely eliminate adverse yaw. Proper control inputs must be used to ensure your aircraft is controlling adverse yaw and maintaining coordinated flight. . What feature on the rudder of most single engine aircraft can be adjusted pre-flight to reduce a pilot's rudder input during flight? Let us know in the comments below See more

Create your own sunset . When the sun starts to fall below the horizon you can really see how fast the world rotates. It seems like you blink and it disappears! If you hop in the air just before the sun sets you can climb high enough that the glowing ball once again crests the horizon. When you descend you can make your own sunset! . Of course, don't look straight at the sun! You can damage your eyes. Let your passenger enjoy the scenery while you focus on the task at h...and: flying the airplane and looking for other airplanes in the sky. . When flying into legal night, make sure you're conducting a walk around to include all of the required aircraft lights and instrumentation for night. Don't forget to bring your headlamp! Check out our pilot shop to get your own aviation flashlight! . What aircraft lights are required for night flights? Let us know in the comments below See more

Windsocks are a pilots indication of the wind conditions on the ground. The more erect the sock, the stronger the wind present on the ground. When overflying an airfield for which there is no ATIS/AWOS, windsocks give the pilot the information they need to determine which runway offers the best performance for their plane to land. What procedure can a pilot follow to be more thorough and descend to check the runway conditions visually prior to landing? Let us know below!

Retractable landing gear [: Dawson Hagens] . . Some aircraft have a retractable landing gear; allowing for the landing gear to be stowed inside the structure of the aircraft during flight. A standard land gear increases drag on the aircraft. As a result, having a retractable landing gear reduces aircraft's drag and subsequently increases climb performance and cruising airspeed. Retractable landing gear systems are powered either hydraulically or electrically (sometimes... a combination of both). . . What might be some disadvantages to having a retractable landing gear? Let us know in the comments below! . #SpectrumAirways #KovachikAirservice #LawrenceAero #FlightSchool #StudentPilot #LearningToFly #Aviation #Airplane #Airport #Aerodrome #PilotLife #InstagramAviation #AME #CFI #PPL #CPL #Cessna #Piper #AviationTips #AircraftMaintenance #RetractableLandingGear #LandingGear See more

Soft-Field Takeoff [: Dawson Hagens] . . Taking off from a soft-field requires a different take-off procedure than normal. Soft-fields increase the amount of friction on the take off roll, and subsequently a longer take off roll. The goal of the soft-field takeoff is to remove the aircraft weight from the wheels to the wings as quickly as possible. Once off the ground you can begin building airspeed much easier and accelerate to a desired speed to begin your climb.... . . What phenomenon allows you to fly level over the runway at low airspeed?
