Crews are still working to replace the broken pole at Webbwood/Lorne and restore power to the 460 customers in Gatchell who are affected...hopefully by 5pm. CG...S has set up a warming shelter at McClelland Arena in Copper Cliff and has a bus at corner of Dean and Jane for quick warm ups. YMCA also a warming location. Statement from City of Greater Sudbury: For Immediate Release Friday, January 29, 2021 Warming Centre Open for Gatchell Residents The City of Greater Sudbury has opened a warming centre at McClelland Community Centre and Arena (37 Veterans Rd., Copper Cliff) for Gatchell residents affected by today’s power outage. A GOVA bus will also be stationed at the intersection of Dean Avenue and Jane Street beginning at 1 p.m. for those needing a quick warmup. Capacity will be limited. The YMCA, located at 140 Durham St., is also open until 7 p.m. Friday. Please remember that masks or face coverings are required when using these services. Physical distancing measures will be in place. Affected residents can also stay with a friend or family member during the outage. The Province has provided an exemption to its stay at home order where there is an immediate risk to health and safety, but each household should choose just one other household and maintain physical distancing. Greater Sudbury Utilities has stated the power is expected to be out for most of the day. Both the bus and the warming centre will be open until power is reinstated. Residents who require additional assistance should contact 311 by phone or Live Web Chat (311.greatersudbury.ca) to discuss their individual situation.

Today's fire environment not only decreases escape times for occupants (approx. 3 min or less), but also presents increased challenges for the fire service. Lar...ger homes + open floor plans + evolving fuel loads + void spaces + changes in building materials + new technologies = faster fire propogation, shorter time to flashover, rapid changes in fire dynamics, shorter escape times, shorter time to collapse, and new/unknown hazards and exposures. For #FFCancerMonth, it is important to recognize the increased chemical and carcionogenic exposure risks of synthetic fuel loads found on today's fireground. Watch our new side-by-side burn comparison of natural vs. synthetic furnished rooms to see the difference in flashover times (think about the difference in what you may face upon arrival) and just how quickly rooms become unsurvivable (think about the importance of working smoke alarms, fire escape plans, and closed doors for increasing the chance of occupant survival). Although the room may take 3:40-4:50min to flashover, in 3 minutes or less smoke will have already spread and may incapacitate occupants whether they are near or remote from the fire before flashover occurs. Three words can save your life, with the what3words app. Download it today! Sudbury is a geographically diverse community, meaning location services are of the ...utmost importance. What3Words is an innovative global address system. What3words is an easy way to talk about location. Every 3m square in the world has been given a unique combination of three words which translates into a what3words address. Following its success to help locate people in need of help in the United Kingdom and Australia; the Greater Sudbury Police 911 Emergency Communications Centre has recently adopted what3words. It will now be utilized to dispatch emergency services to incidents more effectively and reduce response times. A number of Emergency Services across the UK have been using what3words for nearly two years. It has helped rescue people from a range of incidents including locating victims of motor vehicle accidents, people trapped in flood waters, kidnap victims and critically injured hikers and cyclists. It is relied upon by them on a daily basis and has been saving lives across the country. Since emergencies can happen anywhere, identifying precisely where help is needed is critical in order to get resources to the scene quickly. However, this can be near impossible for a caller to do if they get into trouble in an area with no address, no memorable landmark or an address that simply isn’t good enough to accurately describe where they are. By simply saying 3 words it means we can now locate callers with a powerful degree of accuracy, helping us dispatch the right resources to exactly where the emergency is. What3Words can be used via the free app for both iOS and Android or via the online map at what3words.com. The best part about the app is that it continues to work offline, making it ideal for use in the rural areas that might have a poor or unreliable internet connection. However, it only works offline if the app is already downloaded on your phone. That’s why we are strongly encouraging community members to download it. If a caller requires assistance and they don’t already have the app, 911 call takers are able to send an SMS link to them with the what3words online map. However, this function can only be used when the caller is within cellular range. Individuals are also using the what3words app to navigate the world easily and to meet friends in places without addresses such as restaurants, parks, beaches and more. What3words addresses are being used by running clubs, hikers, sailors, and by hotels to guide guests to their entrance without complicated written directions. This new service is far more useful than the traditional ‘ping’ technology currently used by our emergency services. This will now allow us to locate callers as quickly as possible knowing that these crucial minutes are sometimes the difference between life and death. This is the ultimate reason why the Greater Sudbury Police Service is encouraging members of the public to download the free app and be ready to provide their what3words address in an emergency as they will begin using What3Words effective immediately. Officers Safely Remove Woman from Residential Unit Intentionally Set on Fire Shortly before 1:00 a.m. this morning, January 6, 2021, we were called in relation ...to an Intimate Partner Violence incident involving a 31 year old man and a 25 year old woman. When Officers arrived on scene they could see smoke coming from the front window of a unit within the building and could hear a woman yelling for help. Fearing for the safety of the woman, the Officers made entry into the building and into the unit where the smoke was coming from. Once inside Officers could hear the woman screaming from inside of a room that had been barricaded from the outside, preventing her from being able to get out. The Officers entered the room, located the woman and escorted her out of the building to safety. City of Greater Sudbury Fire Services arrived on scene and quickly extinguished the fire, as well as, City of Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services who treated our Officers and the woman for smoke inhalation on scene. Through the investigation it was determined that the man and the woman had gotten into a verbal argument that quickly turned physical leading to the man assaulting the woman and then forcing her into a room where he set off fireworks and barricaded her inside. The man then set fire to another room in the unit before fleeing the scene. Officers have applied for an Arrest Warrant for the 31 year old man for the following Criminal Code Offences; Assault Assault with a Weapon Arson Forcible Confinement Utter Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm Failure to Comply with Order The man’s name cannot be released as the Arrest Warrant has not yet been granted and in order to protect the identity of the woman, no further details regarding the location of the incident will be provided. We would like to recognize our Officers for their quick and selfless actions during this incident that lead to the rescue of the woman.
