If you don't sweat buckets is it still a good workout? If you're using progressive overload to reach a goal or just enjoying exercise, the answer is a resounding yes. The evaporation of sweat from the skin is a cooling mechanism, nothing more. Ever noticed how you get "sweatier" on an indoor treadmill vs jogging outdoors? The added convection of wind around your body makes the evaporation of sweat more efficient than running in place, this is why you may feel like you s...weat more inside even though you're working just as hard outside. Genetics, medication, convection, hydration and temperature are all factors in rates of sweat. Sweat does not increase caloric expenditure or fat loss. Using sweatsuits, saunas, or belly wraps only result in weight loss due to losing water weight. This might have implications for those trying to make a weight class in a sport, where the weightloss needed is quick and temporary, but you don't need to increase your discomfort by using them for everyday exercise. Don't be tricked into buying gimmicky products, and don't feel like you aren't working hard enough if you aren't pouring sweat. Wear what makes you most comfortable, stay hydrated, avoid intense exertion in hot temperatures, and use a fan or a natural breeze while doing cardio See more

What's your reason for working out? Often diet culture pushes exercise solely as a means of shrinking our bodies. When our focus is purely on calories burned and how exercise changes the physical body, we run the risk of becoming blind to all the other wonderful benefits of regular exercise and demotivating ourselves when the number on the scale is all we care about. Challenging this view, there are dozens of positive benefits to working out that have far more to do wi...th how you feel than how you look and improving your overall quality of life. Playing with your dog or kids for awhile longer, carrying in your groceries in one go, catching yourself when you're about to fall, comfortably touching your toes for the first time... not all goals need to be heroic, and not all progress can be measured with a scale. Working out shouldn't be a punishment. Find your reason See more

Repeat after me. Correlation does NOT equal causation. Observational studies in fitness and nutrition are how we obtain correlation data. This research is incredibly useful. We can look for patterns in specific populations, use massive sample sizes, and get pointed in the right direction for additional research. The main caveat of observational studies are that they CANNOT confirm cause and effect. Even if two variables are strongly correlated, lack of controlled variab...les means we need more evidence to prove this. For example, let's say a massive study of 5000 participants found a strong correlation between higher body fat and depression. Sample size was massive and the correlation was strong, so why can't we just assume that being "overweight" causes depression? Consider what other factors might be affecting participants with a higher body fat that also relate to depression. Are they dealing with the social stigma of being overweight? Are they working a stressful job? Are they from a poor socioeconomic background that gives them less access to nutritious food or healthcare? Are they sedentary? Do they have an eating disorder? We don't have this information, and it's clear we have many factors to account for before we can say that higher body fat in itself causes depression. Next time you come across a sensationalized headline along the lines of "Study on ___ finds a strong correlation between _____ and ____ " Remind yourself that correlation in itself means little without additional research, and should not be confused with direct cause. ~ #bodyneutrality #bodypositivity #intuitiveeating #antidiet #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #strongwomen #spirallingupward #allbodiesaregoodbodies #selflove #selfcare #fitness #fitnessmotivation #yeg #yegfitfam #yegfitness #yeglifestyle
