I sometimes encounter wild ones. Bears, coyotes, wolves, beavers, deer and snakes these are some of the beauties I have come across. Sometimes I am in their space, walking in the woods and on trails, and sometimes they are in my space, in my driveway and backyard. I think of bears walking past my bedroom window, wolves tracking my dog into the bushes, and young snakes rattling their beautiful tails at me. Whether they are in my space or I am in theirs, I see us as equals... both residents of the earth, both part of this larger family of feather, furred and scaled. This gives me the courage and presence of mind to remain calm and gentle. trusting the connection with these brothers and sisters. That we are both feeling tentative, unsure of how to respond to each other. I offer my signals of respect and love as clearly as possible, making the effort to avoid encounters that may lead to conflict. I walk where I feel the least intrusive on the lives of my wild family members, making my presence and intention clearly known when I arrive. A quiet intention setting and prayer that my time here will be free of conflict and danger and will be peaceful and safe. I imagine the land and its inhabitants hearing my intention and moving a little aside or hidden for me to pass. Along with prayers, I offer frequent claps calls and whistles to keep others aware of my movement, pace and direction. It feels like a gentle and respectful communication that builds trust and familiarity each time I return to the place. If I am part of creation, I want to play my part in the larger dance between all parties, all members. Each of us walking our path as it intertwines with the paths of many others, careful and kind, respectful and trusting. A leash gives her freedom Peasie is a 10 year old Boston terrier who is losing her eyesight. She has always loved being off leash and exploring new spaces. But today she asked for something different. * We were exploring a new trail that circles a small lake, walking in a close-knit group with Peasie off leash because she can be trusted to make great choices and be responsible with so much freedom. ... * I was surprised when she wanted to be on leash, telling me that it made her feel more secure to be on leash with her unreliable vision. She showed me how, when she was on the leash, she felt more connected to us and felt more secure about her movement and exploration that she was confident she couldn’t lose our location if we were tied together with the leash. * I always want my animal family to enjoy as much freedom as possible as often as possible. Especially Peasie. Determined to show that small dogs are just as powerful and gifted as larger dogs, I would have resisted putting her on leash if anyone else had suggested it. * Later that day we walked at another small fishing lake. Peasie was insecure as we all explored without her on leash. I told my husband Chris and I felt the relief that flooded into her as he picked her up immediately to hug her and speak to her reassuringly. * Peasie helped me see how things were changing and what she needed to adapt to her new circumstances. Without her guidance, I wouldn’t have seen the situation so clearly. I am grateful to my 14 lb guru, who teaches with a generous heart and a gentle way. A hawk’s reminder * Yesterday I saw the big brown hawk sitting in a dead stand tree, atop the hill I walk most mornings. It was magnificent, as it always is when I am fortunate and sumptuous enough to find it soaring in the air or sitting on a branch somewhere near enough to see and admire. * *... I spoke to it yesterday, telling it how I love it and how thankful I am to see it sometimes and to know it exists. I explained how wondrous I believed it was and how terrific it must be to fly. Something I would love to know more about. * * Today I saw it again. Sitting low to the ground on an old fence post. As soon as I saw it, it took flight, saying I waited for you. I like you. You spoke to me. * * I was giddy and unbelieving as it flew away. And as I topped the steep hill to start my walk, I saw it again in the tree from yesterday. It had something to share with me: Ask me why you’re here it said. * * Why am I here? I asked * To do what you are doing it replied. To be who you are. To make the difference you are making. * * But you are not so special it said to me. You must understand you are not very special. Quit making yourself and what you do so special. Yes, you are here to share your gifts. But you are not special. You are part of the whole. It is the whole who invited you here. * * Done. And undone. Both at the same time. Yes, I am not special. And what a relief and honour and joy to know that I am here on invitation from the whole.
