Mount Royal University Sport and Recreation Alumni Chapter 24.01.2021

As we move closer to graduation we will be featuring current students that are graduating in April and are looking to get into the field. Meet Adriane Cairns, she is a 2020 graduate from the Health and Physical Education Degree with a major in sport and recreation management and a minor in marketing. Throughout the program, Adriane has had the opportunity to work with organizations such as Sport Calgary, The Commonwealth Games Federation in Botswana and the Calgary Sport and... Social Club. Growing up in Calgary and travelling across the world, Adriane has first hand experience with organized sport and how it can positively influence and create supportive communities. From volunteering and previous employment, Adriane has been inspired from local events such as the Moguls and Halfpipe World Cups, The ParaTough cup and All Sport One Day and would love to continue in the sport program and event management field. If you would like to reach out to Adriane, she can be contacted at: [email protected] 403-818-0067 www.linkedin.com/in/adrianecairns See more

This month’s featured Alumni is our former leader Jonathan Radomski. Here’s a look into his career and advice for current students. When I was 17, all I knew at the time was that I loved sports and was ready to move away from home to live on my own. Mount Royal University (College at the time) was the perfect match. Our featured alumni of the month is Robyn Madden. She has been in the MRU news lately as she recently received the 2019 MRU Alumni Horizon Award. She graduated from MRU in 2017 with both a degree in Sport and Rec and General Management. She’s now completing her PhD in Kinesiology, Genetics and Metabolism. She’s currently working on formulating her upcoming research, involving analyzing gut microbiota profiles, nutritional assessment and investigating the accuracy of wearabl...e devices for estimating expenditure in individuals with a spinal cord injury. She’s also a teaching assistant in Sports Medicine. She’s published six articles, co-authored a textbook chapter and has traveled nationally and internationally to present her research at conferences. Her advice for current students is to connect with professors and fellow students as those connections will likely facilitate in your career once you are finished in school. I highly attribute my acceptance into graduate school to Dr. David Legg and Dr. Jill Parnell. Fun facts she loves her cats and dogs more then people and she’s a massive Stampeders fan! #SportRecAlum #MRU @mrualumni

We’ve added another guest to our Student Development Series Panel happening this Friday, November 1st, Carson Taylor! During Carson’s time at Mount Royal University, he worked at a few different golf and hockey organizations which helped him determine if he wanted to pursue a career in the golf industry or the hockey industry. Carson chose golf, as he got his pro card in 2017 and became a golf professional. Carson works out of the Winston Golf Club here in Calgary where ...he runs the junior program of over 60 kids, coordinates the ladies program, and when he is not busy doing that he will take the time to play in the PGA of Alberta and PGA of Canada golf tournaments. Don’t forget about our Event Management Panel going on this Friday in the HPED board room from 11:30am - 12:30pm- you don’t want to miss it! @ctay119
