Wonderful to see Emeritus Professor David Beatty from the University of Toronto Law School say that our "challenge to the Canada Election Act should be big news.... Its chances of winning are very good." Beatty also says our case is "a classic example of how Charter challenges can make government more democratic. It is a powerful way of making sure politicians do their jobs." Even more interesting is Beatty's suggestion that Prime Minister Trudeau should fast-track our challenge directly to the Supreme Court to avoid the multi-year process of hearing the case at several different levels of court. What say you, Mr. Trudeau?

Hello everyone! This is Lucy Hulford, chair of the Springtide Board. I am sharing an important update today on behalf of the Board. Today will be Mark Coffin's final day as Executive Director of Springtide. In 2012, Mark started Springtide and since then has led the organization with dedication and passion. While this is a big change, the Board is supportive of Mark's decision and wishes him the best of luck with the next phase of his career. ... The Board remains committed to our primary project - the Charter Challenge for Fair Voting, and over the next few months we'll determine what work (if any) we intend to explore beyond this project. Thank you for your on-going support of Springtide. Click the link below to read our full announcement and learn more. https://www.springtide.ngo/update-from-springtide-2020-08-/

Springtide has several concerns with the administration of the upcoming municipal elections. The provincial government is responsible for the Municipal Elections Act which says municipalities must hold elections this October. Municipal governments have expressed concern about their own capacity to administer a safe and democratic election during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recently, the Springtide board decided to end our contract with the Department of Municipal Affairs and Hou...sing. The agreement - signed prior to the pandemic - asked Springtide to encourage candidates and voters to participate in the election. After learning that the two levels of government who share responsibility for municipal election administration in law do not agree on whether a safe and fair election is possible, we conducted our own analysis of the situation. We have concluded that a fair and safe election is unlikely given the state of Nova Scotia's Municipal Elections Act, the cautions of election administrations elsewhere in Canada, and time required to prepare alternatives to traditional, in-person paper balloting. You can read more about the thinking that went into this decision, and the many concerns we've identified surrounding the administration of fall elections in the letter we sent to the minister of Municipal Affairs yesterday morning.
