Friends I am disheartened to tell you that I will not be representing the Victoria-Beacon Hill NDP in the provincial election. While this is not the result we wanted, I am so deeply appreciative for this experience and for all of you. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all the people who took the time to volunteer for my nomination campaign. Your skills, energy, and drive were incredible. Thank you to all the #peopleforpapik, my supporters near and far, who endorsed ...me, believed in me, and took the time spread the word. Thank you to each and every member of the Victoria-Beacon Hill NDP, especially those who took the time to get to know me and tell me about your issues, priorities, and hopes for our riding and our province. I would like to congratulate Grace Lore, who won the nomination, and everyone who contributed to her campaign. It takes so much courage to put your name forward to run for elected office, and our democracy is stronger when the membership chooses the person they want to represent them. I know Grace will be an incredible candidate for the NDP. Growing up, I never imagined I would be vying for an NDP nomination. I dreamt of escaping the racism that people like me face, of being able to freely love my culture without fear, and of being able to build a better life for me and my family. Because when the colour of your skin is different, when your face literally shows your culture, many people will turn to fear, hate, or stereotypes. These experiences have shaped me. They've made me realize that if we want things to be different, we need to be courageous and stand up for what's right. And so my last thank you is to my ancestors, the people before me who preserved, shared, and celebrated their culturesour culture. You made me who I am today. And I'm ever grateful to the Lekwungen people, the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations, on whose land I navigate my way through the world. Quyanak. Hychka. Thank you. From every part of my being.
