The beginning of the St. George's Society and the City of Toronto are closely linked. Muddy York, the largest town in Upper Canada with a population of 9,254 became the City of Toronto on the 6th March 1834, and the inception of the Society followed a few weeks later. The building in the the image was known as the Chewitt Building, which held the British Coffee House on the ground floor - the location where the Society was established. This building was later replaced with the Rossin House Hotel, and today the TD Centre can be found here.
