WHY ARE WE SINGING ABOUT THE KILLING OF GIANTS IN OUR NATIVITY SERVICES? Two weeks left before we start our new Orthodoxy 101 class (on Jan. 13). 8 people are currently registered. If you'd like to know more about what the Orthodox Church believes, and why, sign up and join us. If you are Orthodox, and you have family members who sometimes wonder what it is you actually believe, encourage them to take the class (and you can join them, if you wish). OR ...... If you're looking for something a little deeper than an introductory Bible Study, come join us for our study on The Unseen Realm (starting Jan. 7), as we look into the supernatural and spiritual world of the Old Testament, Second Temple Judaism, the Apostles, and the Early Church Fathers. The Christmas season is a perfect time to register for such a course, since we are singing the beautiful Nativity Troparion that talks about the Magi worshipping stars, and being taught by a star. What's that all about, and why were they worshipping stars? Come and find out. Your Nativity, O Christ our God, has shone to the world the Light of wisdom! For by it, those who worshipped the stars, were taught by a Star to adore You, the Sun of Righteousness, and to know You, the Orient from on High. O Lord, glory to You! Also, in one of the hymns during our Nativity Vigil on Christmas Eve, we sang the words, The Lord (Yahweh) is superior to all the gods [were these gods real, or just imaginary?] He has struck many nations and killed powerful kings: Sihon, king of the Amorites, and Og, the king of Bashan ..." Sihon and Og were Giants that were killed by the Israelites -- why are we singing about them during our Nativity services? But wait, there's more! The land that the giant Og was King of was called Bashan. This was the land of Mt. Hermon, where the ancient people who surrounded the Jews believed that the very Gates of Hell [Hades] existed, and at the foot of this rocky area of Mt. Hermon was the city of Caesarea Philippi. One day, as Jesus was visiting this city with his disciples, he said to them, I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock [ie. Mt. Hermon] I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. (Mt. 16:18). Want to know what Jesus was really talking about there, and how all these things tie back into Genesis? Join our course on The Unseen Realm, and delve deeper into your Faith than you’ve even been before. www.sthermans.ca/unseen-realm www.sthermans.ca/orthodoxy-101

This also on fasting as we enter the Advent Nativity Fast .... "Abstaining from food will not save me. Even if I were to eat only the sand from the lake, You [L...ord] would not come to me, unless the fasting penetrated deeper into my soul. I have brought fasting into my mind, so that it might [throw out] the world and prepare to receive Your Wisdom. And I have brought fasting into my heart, so that it might [overcome] all passions and worldly selfishness. I prescribe fasting for my tongue, to break itself of the habit of idle chatter. And I have imposed fasting on my worries so that it might blow them all away like the wind that blows away the mist, lest they stand like a dense fog between me and You [Lord], and lest they turn my gaze back to the world. And [fasting] has instilled in me courage, the likes of which I never knew when I was armed with every sort of worldly weapon." (Prayers from the Lake) See more

As we are now approaching the end of the first year of this pandemic, I am hearing more and more Christians talking about the end of the world, and the signs of the end-times. Thankfully, St. Symeon the New Theologian gives us a much-needed corrective to this kind of nonsense-thinking: "Let us therefore put aside every vain and unprofitable disputation, and let us not seek ahead of time to learn what is proper to that hour, i.e., the Second Coming, but instead let us be pers...uaded by the Master Who says: Search the Scriptures (Jn. 5:39). Search, that is, and not meddle! Search the Scriptures and do not busy yourselves with disputes which lie outside the sacred writings. Search the Scriptures so that you may learn about faith, and hope, and love. About faith, so that you may not be tossed about by every wind which comes from the trickery of unstable men, but are rather rooted in the true dogma of the apostolic and catholic Church and rightly divide the word of her truth (2 Tim. 2:15). And not only this, but you should be taught as well to seek out the fruits of faith and the profit which derives from them through the practice of the commandments. When you have been enabled to find them, then indeed you shall be in possession of hope unashamed, and in the latter you shall possess the entirety of love for God. For it is impossible for anyone to possess perfect love for God otherwise than by grace of an unalloyed faith and a hope which is secure and unshakable. Why then do we abandon the examination of ourselves concerning these matters? And, if in fact we have that faith in God which He Himself Who will judge us says He will demand of us, why should we busy ourselves with matters which are beyond us, in particular when in truth we fail to see things which lie at our very feet."

Today the Church remembers St. Tikhon (1865-1925), Patriarch of Moscow, and her glorification of him as a saint on this day in 1989. From 1898 to 1907 he served... as a missionary Bishop in North America, leading the Church in its apostolic ministry in and to the people of these lands. These photographs of the saint convey something of his personality, which was one of peace even during manifold crises. The murals of his life are painted on the gates of Donskoy Monastery, where he was kept under house arrest by the atheistic Soviet regime during the final years of his life, and where his holy relics (his body) were discovered in February of 1992. There is also a photo of the Church where his casket was secretly hidden by the faithful (protected behind a wall) for many years. In this same Church, all of the Holy Chrism used by the Church in Russia is confected. See more

Thank you to all of you who have been watching our livestreaming services when you've been unable to attend in person. One of our parishioners has done a wonderful job of setting up his iPhone at each service since June, so that we could stream our services online. Starting this weekend, we will be using our new camera and microphone system. You can continue to watch the services here, or by using other options on our website:... https://sthermans.ca/live We have done some testing to make sure the sound quality of microphones is good, but we may have to make a few tweaks along the way. Please feel free leave a message to let us know if you experience any problems in the audio/video quality. The viewing experience may not be perfect yet, as we are still using a WiFi connection. Our internet company is in the process of installing a wired high-speed connection, which will greatly improve video quality, but this won't be completed for another three months or so.

"So we have come to church, to the Liturgy! Let nothing disturb the tranquility of your soul. God is present. Wherever we look, God is before us! If we don’t see Him, this doesn’t mean He isn’t there, but only that our eyes are not used to seeing Him. At the end of the Divine Liturgy, we proclaim: We have seen the true light. Our hearts have seen it. We have felt it deep within our life. + Elder Aimilianos, Our Church Attendance

Teensy Tiny Favour In about two weeks, if everything goes according to schedule, Telus (our internet provider) will be installing our fibre network, and we can begin livestreaming our services to more people around the world. Right now we are using personal equipment to livestream just to facebook. However, now that we have our own equipment, and with a good internet connection, we will soon be livestreaming to facebook, Youtube, and our parish website. Everything is set u...p and ready to go. However, I have one small favour to ask. In order to get a custom URL for Youtube (which will be easier to send prospective viewers to), our Church channel needs to have 100 subscribers. Currently we have 72. Would you please take a moment to head over to our Youtube channel (you'll even see a few videos on there from years ago), and click on the "subscribe" button? By doing so, you'll be notified when there's a livestream of our services on there, or when other video content is loaded on the channel. Thank you. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6H1irrcQNAiL1hBbLFTQMw
