Meet Brittany, nurse practitioner (NP) at Horizon’s St. Joseph’s Community Health Centre in Saint John. It’s Nurse Practitioner Week and we’re recognizing s...ome of the incredible NPs across Horizon who provide primary care to patients of every age and walk of life. I always knew I wanted to continue my education as a nurse, said Brittany. The role of an NP is the perfect combination of medicine and nursing, which was very appealing to me. Working as part of a collaborative health care team while also having increased autonomy to work independently is a benefit of the NP role. Brittany loves being able to care for patients throughout their lifespan, from newborns to seniors. And being able to care for the physical, emotional, mental and social aspects of their health. In my practice I am very involved in caring for the newcomer and refugee population, she said. I feel I am making a difference in their lives by supporting their health needs during the difficult time of transitioning to a new country. C’est la Semaine des infirmières et infirmiers praticiens! Nous soulignons le travail des incroyables IP d’Horizon qui prodiguent des soins primaires à des patients de tous âges et de toutes les couches de la société. J’ai toujours su que je voulais poursuivre ma formation à titre d’infirmière , explique Brittany. Le rôle d’IP est la combinaison idéale entre la médecine et les soins infirmiers, ce que je trouvais fort intéressant. Travailler comme membre d’une équipe collaborative de prestation de soins primaires tout en ayant la possibilité de travailler de façon autonome est un avantage du rôle d’IP. Brittany adore pouvoir prendre soin de patients de tous âges, depuis les nouveau-nés jusqu’aux personnes âgées, et être en mesure répondre à leurs besoins en matière de santé physique, émotionnelle, mentale et sociale. Dans le cadre de mon travail, je participe beaucoup aux soins prodigués aux nouveaux arrivants et aux réfugiés , souligne-t-elle. J’ai l’impression de faire du bien dans leur vie en veillant à leurs besoins en matière de santé durant la période difficile d’adaptation à un nouveau pays. Meet Linda, a medical radiation technologist (MRT) in the Breast Imaging Department at Horizon’s St. Joseph’s Hospital in Saint John. October is Breast Cance...r Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among New Brunswick women and is a leading cause of cancer-related death. Early detection of breast cancer is important, and Linda encourages women to get tested. She has over 30 years experience in the field of radiography and has seen technology improvements with advanced X-rays, ultrasounds, MRI, etc. Most women experience some anxiety about mammography and our team works well together to help make the patient feel at ease, said Linda. We take the time to explain the procedure and answer any questions our patients may have, and I feel it helps create a comforting environment from the reception area to the exam and procedure rooms. Linda reminds women between the ages of 50 to 74 they can self-refer for a potentially life-saving mammogram by calling their local mammography department. These tests are free and should be done every two years or at a frequency determined by your primary care provider's recommendation. Le dépistage précoce du cancer du sein est important, c’est pourquoi Linda encourage les femmes à subir les examens nécessaires. Comptant plus de 30 ans d’expérience en radiographie, Linda a été témoin de percées technologiques avec l’arrivée d’appareils sophistiqués de radiographie, d’échographie et d’imagerie par résonance magnétique. La plupart des femmes sont nerveuses en arrivant à un rendez-vous de mammographie. Il est important pour tous les membres de notre équipe de faire ce qu’il faut pour qu’elles se sentent à l’aise , explique Linda. Nous prenons le temps de leur expliquer le déroulement de l’examen et de répondre à toutes leurs questions. Je trouve que ça aide à créer une ambiance réconfortante durant toutes les étapes de l’examen. Linda rappelle aux femmes âgées entre 50 et 74 ans qu’elles peuvent elles-mêmes demander un rendez-vous de mammographie qui pourrait leur sauver la vie en téléphonant au service de mammographie de leur région.
