Today marks the 31st anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. For generations, societies have built walls for safety. The place inside the walls was the pl...ace you retreated to during an attack. You were safe inside. The enemy was outside. Inside was the place you wanted to be. On the other hand, walls that keep people in against their will are a hallmark of big-government intervention. Today, let us remember the untold millions around the world who died because of communism’s evil ideology. Rather than keeping enemies out, THEIR walls keep people in. These walls prevent people from escaping the horrors of central planning and government control on its citizens. Big government socialism had failed so miserably that German officials had to build THEIR wall to keep people from leaving. Other communist countries had (and still have) virtual walls. These take the forms of travel restrictions and border controls, designed to make leaving impossible. When given the choice, people will always choose free markets and individual liberty. After all, nobody ever got shot trying to get INTO East Berlin. Nobody tries to escape TO Cuba. When a government tells you how wonderful something will be, but makes it illegal to opt-out or make your own choices, remember that they are erecting a wall to keep you inside. Let's fight every day to make sure that Canada is a land of free markets and individual liberty. . In Flanders Fields . In early May, 1915 one of Canada's most renown poems was written by one of Canada's best known poets. In a story that has become legend, ...John McCrae wrote the first version of "In Flanders Fields" on 3 May 1915, after presiding over the funeral of a friend and fellow soldier. The poem is one of the reasons the poppy has become an international symbol of remembrance, especially important in Canada, the USA, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia. . John McCrae wrote throughout his life. During his university years 16 of his poems were published. Later, as a doctor, he wrote extensively on medical subjects, including articles for the "Montreal Medical Journal" and "American Journal of Medical Science". He, and his brother, were major contributor's to "Osler's Modern Medicine". He also co-authored a textbook on pathology, and was a member of the Pen and Pencil Club, which counted Stephen Leacock among its ranks. He lectured regularly, and was a pathologist at Montréal General Hospital, and later, the Royal Victoria Hospital. After studying in England, he became a member of the Royal College of Physicians. . John McCrae never married, possibly due to the death of the love of his life when they were only eighteen. He could, however, be described as a committed family man. When he left for France in 1914, he took his beloved horse, Bonfire, along. His young nieces and nephews received letters from Bonfire, signed with a hoof print. . Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae's first experience with war was when he postponed his education and served with D Battery, Canadian Field Artillery, during the South African War ( or The Second Boer War ). He would serve there for a year, leaving his military career behind in 1904. When The Great War began in 1914 he enlisted at once. In a letter to a friend he described his reason, "It is a terrible state of affairs, and I am going because I think every bachelor, especially if he has experience of war, ought to go. I am really rather afraid, but more afraid to stay at home with my conscience." John McCrae fell ill in January of 1918, and died of pneumonia with "extensive pneumococcus meningitis" on 28 January 1918. . Artist's note - I chose to colour this picture because it shows Lt.-Col. McCrae in France, early in the war. We see him in uniform, and I believe this honours his commitment to duty, choosing to join the war effort because he felt he "ought to go". At the same time we see him enjoying a happy moment, away from the horrors of war, with his "best friend" Bonneau. It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in: Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent, Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent; Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)! In the state of Victoria..... lone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent.(Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not and criminals still possess their guns!) While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins andassaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in 'successfully ridding Australian society of guns....' You won't see this on the American evening news or hear your governor or members of the State Assembly disseminating this information. The Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens. Take note Americans, before it's too late!
